Impossible Creatures is an old real-time strategy game developed by Relic Entertainment and released in late 2002 for PC. Compared to Relic's other titles, it wasn't a huge hit, but still managed to get a decent following and has become a cult classic. The game's engine was utilized in later years to develop the first entries to Relic's Dawn of War franchise.

Unlike other RTS games, IC allows you to create your own units (up to nine at a time) by combining the limbs of two different animals to create all sorts of terrifying (or, alternatively, hilarious) monstrosities by using the game's army builder feature. Otherwise, the game features your standard RTS fare: gather resources, build up your base, research new tech, and crush your enemy with your army of abominations. Of course, you don't know what sorts of creatures your opponent will be bringing to the battlefield...

The game was quite active for some time, but eventually died down enough that Microsoft, the game's publisher, decided to close down the official IC Online servers. This forced what was left of the community at the time to resort to using Hamachi and IP games to play, which was less than ideal. Nevertheless, we persevered for nearly a decade, desperately trying to breathe life into an all-but-dead game.

Our struggle is over, however, as Nordic Games ( http://www.nordicgames.at/ ) acquired the rights to IC from THQ (who acquired Relic) when they went bankrupt. Less than 24 hours ago, Nordic Games released Impossible Creatures on Steam, remastered to ensure compatibility with modern PCs. They have also resurrected the IC Online multiplayer servers, officially rebirthing the game.

So, this post is for anyone here on WrongPlanet who played IC in the past and wants to wax nostalgic. Or maybe you have no idea what IC is but it sounds interesting and you'd like to try it. That's great too.

The game can be purchased here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/324680/

Maybe we'll see each other on ICO in the future. :)

I recall this game from a long time back though I never played the game myself I do though, remember seeing various playthroughs of it on youtube. If I recall correct you were able to create an army of all sorts of animals with different & unique traits and quality by splicing their dna.
