We've all heard of them, the big companies and their flagship franchises, and people often praise them for some good qualities.

However, sometimes, some of us feel as if these games aren't really all that deserving of their praise, and I'm pretty sure we can all relate to at least one game. What game or franchise do you think isn't worthy of what it got.

Getting mine out of the way: Fire Emblem Awakening.
Having played the older games before, and not going by nostalgia, Awakening not only felt too easy, but the characters and cast were bleh at best compared to some in the past, which is apparently where most people were drawn in. I dunno why, but I really fail to see why other than this unit should date this unit, which... felt better executed in the past, I dunno why. Plus, the difficulty I never felt unless I paid for the DLC, which some were but... it made me feel a bit cheated. The game's still okay, but... it felt underwhelming compared to previous entries in nearly every single way to me.

There are plenty that I think are pretty overrated. Final Fantasy, for example. The early games that have had remakes on Nintendo systems I've played, and they are totally awesome. Absolutely love them. But when I played one of the more recent games (XIII-2, I believe), the game play and turn-based combat style that the series started with just... wasn't there. It felt awkward, to say the least. Certainly didn't let me actually pick the actions beyond some pretty basic ones. Couldn't even pick a spell to use if I wanted to use one. The series has veered too far from its roots. It's kinda why I prefer DragonQuest, but with the latter there's also some neat wordplay, phonetic accents used, and the awesome character & monster designs of one Akira Toriyama. Too bad it's not as popular here in the states as it is in Japan.

For me, most AAA games fall into this, really. It's very hard to pick any single one.

Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon - they are only card games, after all - and any computer-based game where people brag about their "Cheevos", as if they were real achievements.

I just want to go on record and say I hate achievement systems. All of them.

I will go out of my way in some cases to make sure I dont get them. Because bah.

And even within the context of the game in question, they're rarely actual achievements. I've seen games that give you one for doing something like selecting a character. Oh, boy, the player can use the MENU. WHAT SKILL. Better reward them. Ugh.

Leveling up should be enough of an achievement for anyone. What point is there to a merit badge for fire-making in an on-line video game, anyway?

Feh, leveling up in a video game typically requires no effort either. Usually amounts to "grinding". Repeating exceedingly simplistic (in other words, as easy as conceivably possible) battles against small rodents or something over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.... sigh. It can take many hours.

I'll never understand the appeal. For me, no actual challenge = no interest.

THEORETICALLY "achievements" are supposed to be given for things that require real skill, that are very difficult to do. But nooooo. That's not how it is in today's industry. We cant have anyone feeling left out. Cant have anyone feeling like they arent a WINNER. They might not buy the next 30 sequels if that happens! Oh noes!

Ugh. Dont mind me. I'm in one of my "I hate everything" moods.

I used to play LoL. It is a pretty good game, honest. It's the community and types of people that play it that suck. I would love it if there was a different kind of game set in that world that I could play. And yeah, it was the community that made me quit. If you don't play the meta, you shouldn't play at all.

I would bet anything can be considered overrated to people.

I never understood the point of these types of topics, is it just to complain about stuff you don't like? I don't always understand the hype about games, but if people enjoy them- thats their right. I don't need to call them overrated due to not liking it.

Wait, I've got one:

CS:GO.

That's right, I said it. Freaking Counter-strike.

I dont understand the appeal of this game. It's got ONE DAMN MAP. ONE. It's a freaking FPS with ONE MAP. Oh I know TECHNICALLY it has others. But do you ever see anyone USE them? No. They play on the ONE map. And, it's an insta-kill FPS with long, long respawn times. Get shot, and BAM, you get the hilarious fun of just sitting there and waiting. Since this can happen fast, well.... yeah. To me the problem is pretty obvious.

But really the game is just so bloody boring. One map, uninteresting game modes, and just... ugh. I could rant about it for awhile.

This all occurs to me because Steam is now rambling about some big huge tournament or something with the game, complete with images of some crowded stadium of viewers, and I have to resist the urge to facedesk.

Pretty much.

I think it's almost meant as a somewhat safe place to vent about stuff like this. One way or another everyone's got games they hate, usually, but you often cant MENTION that, or even give a vaguely negative-at-all opinion of a game in general gaming forum areas without people flipping the hell out. But in a topic like this... you can. And maybe you might actually find someone else that ALSO doesnt like such-and-such and thus also might have similar tastes to your own (leading to actual discussion).

Also, some of us (me) are just good at complaining about stuff.
