Final Fantasy I.
So here's the deal, I own just these 4 Final Fantasy games.
Final Fantasy I&II: Dawn of Souls.
Final Fantasy VI Advance.
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King.
Now I got addicted to My Life as a King for an entire weekend, but that's an entirely different kind of game, so let's ignore that. Also ignore Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings; that's an RTS/RPG.
I wasn't at all able to get immersed in Final Fantasy II or VI, and few other Final Fantasy games even pique my interest enough to consider buying them.
But Final Fantasy I, ironically, with it's nameless, mute characters got a hold of me that none of the other games in the franchise have managed to do. I find the whole story about Garland, the fiends and the time-loop more interesting than any of that Sephiroth crap. And I find the nameless, speechless Warriors of Light much cooler than characters like Cloud or Squall.
Am I the only one who thinks the original Final Fantasy is just supreme? I'd go freaking insane if SquareEnix were to remake Final Fantasy I in the style of Final Fantasy IV DS. Voice acting for Garland/Chaos would be epic. By the way, I find Garland/Chaos to be the most super-awesome twist in a story; ever.
No. I will refrain from clarifying my objective opinion of that question. I consider the best Final Fantasy story to be either VI's or IX's.
In a way, Dissidia: Final Fantasy may be what you're looking for. It has voice acting for Garland (and probably Chaos too) and a Light Warrior.

I don't have a PSP; not enough games really interest me on it.
But this is serious news! I thought Dissidia was just Final Fantasy VII!
So it's basically just some crazy fighting game with characters from throughout the series?

And, wonder of wonders, it actually has a plot to boot.

Praise be the day!
Cecil kills Cloud!
Rydia kidnaps Sepiroth!
Garland knocks people down!

I thought the battle system was kind of cool...and then they got rid of it and never looked back =/
The second game made me angry when I walked one step too far to the left and got destroyed by a random encounter. If you know what I mean.

I wasn't at all a fan of the battle system, and the characters all bored me. Except for the pirate, and her stereotypical pirate accent grated on my nerves. The plot is also pretty unmemorable, in my opinion. When I think about the game now, I am overcome with staggering indifference.
The first game, on the other hand, was brilliant specifically because it's almost a blank slate, character and story-wise. The sparse plot and non-existent characterization lets your imagination fill in the blanks. To me it seemed like the four warriors of light pretty much came out of thin air, and the idea amuses me to no end.
My favorite Final Fantasy games, at this point, would be FF4, FFX, and FFTacticsAdvance. I don't care if you think Marche was a jerkass, it was a neat story.

FFI was fun but was ridiculously easy. I completed the game in less than 14 hours and beat the final boss in like 6 rounds.
FFII was also fun but insanely hard. I spent 75% of my total game time, which was about 36 hours =/ , training to save up money and just bought tons of elixirs and equipped Blood Swords in the fight against the final boss.
My favourite FF games (in order): - Joint first: FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX. Joint second: FFVI and FFXII. Joint third: FFX and FFX-2. Joint fourth: FFIV and FFV.
FFVII was the first FF game I ever played. One of my friends tried to get me into it before but since I accidentally used his brothers save, and he had completed most of it leaving only Emerald and Ruby weapon left (which I couldn't beat at the time), I got bored and gave up. I then got into it when my neighbour got it and kept getting stuck and so I did certain parts for him and, seeing as I got to see it from the beginning, I got into it. I then got my own copy. I just loved everything about it. Whilst I found some of the characters annoying I loved all the creepy settings, like when you're in the Shinra tower after Sephiroth breaks in and steals Jenova and kills everybody and so on. I also loved the annoying hard sidequests. I was so chuffed when I finally got a Gold Chocobo. It literally solved all my problems. I got Knights of the Round which was instrumental in my fights against Ruby and Emerald. Quadra Magic -> Master Summon, Final Blow -> Phoenix also helped.
I loved FFVIII. I actually liked the characters this time. Squall just reminded me of me, except that he was deliberately a loner and so came off as a bit of a poser in the beginning but towards the end he kind of grew on me. I found the battle system annoying but I loved the GFs. Randomly receiving money also confused me but I didn't really mind. I loved pretty much everything about this. All the SeeD missions and all that really appealed to me, especially stealing the President's train and trying to assassinate the sorceress, due to the amount of planning and precision etc. Anything executed in stages and phases in a certain order gets my vote usually. I just loved this game so much that I didn't really care about the flaws. The only thing I really hated was how, when you got to the final dungeon the rest of the locations on the world map became inaccessible. Also, MINIGUNS. There is nothing better than wasting 10 minutes trying to kill a boss when your nerdy instructor blasts it to smithereens with a mounted gun turret. I actually managed to beat the boss the second time but I don't like doing that as there is no cool scene of Quistis being undoubtedly badass for once. Laguna missions were also brilliant.
I loved FFIX in every way. I can't really fault it all. The only thing I found annoying was Kuja being a complete pansy yet he managed to kick your ass every time. I could understand when he became Trance-Kuja but before that he was a pinky wafer. It truly baffled me. Osma also confused me. How is a multi-coloured ball so powerful? I also loved the summons in this.
The only FF games I do not own are FFIII and FFXI. FFIII is for DS and all my other games are either PS1 or PS2. I demand consistancy. FFXI is an MMORPG, and you have to pay. There is no single player storyline and thus a failure in my eyes. I demand consistancy!! ! If I had the money I would actually pay Square Enix to make a PS port for FFIII and to develop a single player story for FFXI (as long as it was a PS port too).
Nobuo Uematsu is one the best composers OF ALL TIME EVER. Every game, the music fits 100%. The only people who come close are Frank Klepacki and Graeme Norgate, imo.

I didn't read most of your rant because I haven't played FFVIII through to the end and I didn't want spoilers for FFVII.
I thought FFI was challenging. The first time I played it I ignored the temples so the final boss was hard, but the temples are fun and exciting and the bosses there are intense.
On the subject of FFVIII, I'm about halfway through the game and I'm enjoying it so far, although the spell system is the pitts and I can't figure out how to play that stupid card game.
See, most of my Final Fantasy games are Gameboy Advance remakes, and most of the ones I don't have are for the playstation or playstation 2. Console consistency is important, but so long as I can buy the game and play it, I'm happy. I'm actually almost finished playing Final Fantasy III, and the graphics are cute, the plot is fun, and I'm really enjoying it, except for the fact that it's got a crummy save system, but nothing's perfect.
That said, I do agree with you about Final Fantasy XI. I don't like MMORPGs either. They're not very practical unless you have friends who also play the same MMORPG, and making friends through the game is pretty much out of the question, since no one can spell or ever bothers to type full sentences, leaving one with the impression that the game is full of brain-dead idiots. So yeah, Final Fantasy as an MMORPG? not my cup of tea. not even with two lumps of sugar and half a saucer of cream.

i don't find it surprising it at all. you chose who went into your party, named each them, and play through them for such a long time you get invested to the point that it feels like you yourself are fighting.
this i think is a prime example of less story making an RPG better.

About FFI, I liked it. But it was very easy. . . I cleared the game playing 2 hours after school in 2 weeks (it would be faster, but I was trying to complete the bestiary). The good part is that you have to name the charcacters, and you can imagine you are one of the Light Warriors. If you like Final Fantasy I, you must check 8-bit Theater.
It's rare to find people who likes FFVIII here
My favorites are FFIV, FFVI, FFVIII, FFT and FFTA.
I own FF Origins (FF I & II for PSOne), FF Chronicles (FFIV & Chrono Trigger), FF Anthology (FF V & VI), FFVIII, FFX, FFX-2, FFT (PSOne & PSP versions) and FFT Advance.
FFVIII was the first FF game I played, a guy from secondary school lent me a backup, and I got adicted. Then my sister (she was hooked too, thanks to me
I loved the Triple Triad card game, I also tried to play an online and bigger version of the card game, but my internet connection was lame. Also, Laguna adventures were great
btw, I remembered I have FFXII too, but I haven't played it because my PS2 couldn't read the disc.

Ironically enough, the games in which I got most involved in were FFIV, FFVIII, and FFX, and FFTacticsAdvance. I did like the blank slate effect, but three of those games had pretty intrusive main characters. Cecil, for instance, spends the first third of the game angsting about how he's a Dark Knight, Squall spends the first half being a total jerkass because he has abandonment issues, and Tidus has an annoying voice and go-getter attitude that grates on my nerves sometimes. Laguna adventure ARE great, though. I think Laguna's cute in an 'aww, he's so adorably awkward, I want to hug him and be his mom' sort of way. I guess I need to get Final Fantasy XII. By now I've invested in this game series, and no way do I want to stop until I've played Final Fantasy VII.
