May I also point out that it is common practice for girls, at young ages, to have their clitoris cut out, usally by a sharp piece of glass or the like, with no anesthia, because it is considered immoral for a woman to have pleasure during sex. Also, its common for a women over there to have her labia sewn shut save for a small hole for urination to ensure her virginity.

Also, a Cleric of Islam said it is wrong and dishonorable to stop a 9 year old girl from marrying a 40 yr old man, and that its her right as a female to do so.

Don't you just love religion  ?

Judaism and Christianity falls also under the category of religions of 'peace'.

Perhaps this might be better interpreted sexually rather than politically.

Religion has been exploited and used historically and is still used today to justify many many atrocities like this. Commiting atrocities in the name of the one richeous g-d is the best justification one could give....how could you thwart the will of the almighty? Poeple use religion to justify and maintain whatever the status quo is in a particular society. I suppose unfortunatley in certain cases it is used to promote a very traditional patriarichal society, and basically oppress women and keep them down. Unfortunatley rape is a somewhat accepted part of the status quo of a lot of these societies. SO DISTURBING

It is too bad because religion can be such a life-saver and a beacon of hope to people at the worst moments of their lives.

The brain function of "faith" certainly can...but organized religion...the whole power structure deal and people subjugating themselves to the will and morality of others...that's absolutely destructive. The myth of shared morality is a destructive myth of ego.
