I'm Gay and was raised Catholic. When I came out of the closet, my priest said I'm committing a horrible sin and all this weird stuff. Why do the people at the Catholic Church I attned treat me differently when they found out I was queer?

I don't know what reason they use, but it wouldn't make much sense either way you look at it. Any church that can't truly understand why you do what you do is eventually going to do the wrong thing for you.

Catholics, like most Christian groups, consider homosexuality a sin. They consider it a sin for about the same reasons as other Christian groups.

I do not understand. Why is it a sin? Didn't Jesus die for my sins? He died for me to be gay, no? I'm mean Jesus was obviously a Gay man.

What you are saying is illogical. On the one hand, you are saying that being gay is not a sin. Then you are saying that Jesus died for your sins. Then you are saying that He died for you to be gay. Which would imply that you think that being gay is a sin.

You need to decide whether being gay is a sin or not, because you seem a bit confused.

That is one issue.

The other issue is about what Jesus dying for sin means. Since I'm not gay, and you're emotionally confused as to whether it's a sin or not, let's look at one of my sins... that way you won't think I'm getting at you. Okay? :)

Jesus died for my sins. Let's say I'm a thief. (I have been a big shop lifter in the past, so this is a practical example.)

Jesus died for mgran. He died for her sins. Mgran is a thief. Did Jesus die so that mgran could remain a thief? No. He died to pay the penalty she should have paid. A thief has to come to justice and a true judge will find a thief guilty. Mgran is up the creek without a paddle, she can't pay the fine. The penalty for sin is death (I'll explain why later if you're interested) and mgran has committed more sin than she knows what to do with.

Then along comes Jesus, and He dies for her sin, to pay the penalty for her sin.

He doesn't die this horrible death and say that mgran should carry on shoplifting (or any of her other horrible sins.) He says "go and sin no more."

I think it sounds like you've not read much of the Bible. I know it's a hard read, but I would read the gospels through several times, to get more of an idea what Jesus said and did. I don't agree that He was "obviously a gay man." He did love men, but He also loved women. Love doesn't have to be about sex all the time, and Jesus had the purest love... He loved for no reason, with no hope of a return, sexual or otherwise.

Why is it a sin? Because Christian tradition and revelation considers it a sin, and because the natural law of Aquinas considers it unnatural.(Aquinas is a major figure for modern Catholic theology) As lust itself is considered sinful, and the emission of semen is intended for procreation(homosexual emission obviously isn't towards this end):
Summa Contra Gentiles Book 2, Section 122, by Thomas Aquinas wrote:
The emission of the semen then ought to be so directed as that both the proper generation may ensue and the education of the offspring be secured.
If that seems weird, haven't you thought about why Catholics are against condoms and abortions?

No, Jesus didn't die for you to be gay. You don't understand Christian theology if you think that, and such an idea can be dismissed with a simple quote of Paul's.
Romans 6:1-2 wrote:
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
Jesus died so that you wouldn't go to hell for your sins, not so that you can sin freely at all. Catholics in addition believe that good works are necessary for salvation.

Jesus is not considered homosexual under the Catholic view or just about any mainstream Christian view. Just say that Jesus was gay to your priest and he'll certainly have issues with that.

I never wrote anywhere that "being gay is not a sin." Since I never wrote that or even implied that, your first point of me being illogical fails. You shouldn't make up stuff that someone never wrote, while trying to claim they're being illogical. It's not logical.

Now I am emotionally confused? You just wrote I seemed confused and now you have changed that, to I'm emotionally confused.

Yes, Jesus is died for my gay love affairs.

Yes, and so when I sin again Jesus has already paid the price for all of my sins. He died for my gay love affairs.

So it's okay to love men only?

Argh... if you're going to follow a religion, you should at least know what it's about. Right now you only seem to follow this particular faith because were, dare I say brainwashed?

Wow, there's a lot of muddle in there.

Okay... so could you set me right here... do you personally think that practising homosexuality is a sin? If so, then you're in agreement with the Catholic church. So why are you wondering why they don't accept your life style?

Do you think that Catholicism teaches that it's okay to sin, because Jesus paid the price for your sin? It doesn't teach that... you're talking about some brand of gnostism. The New Testament actually talks about that very idea... it says, "should we sin so that grace should abound, NO." The idea is that while we might struggle with sin, we should not indulge in it as though it doesn't matter to God.

So, can I ask? Are you a gay man who thinks that homosexuality is a sin, but it doesn't matter, because Jesus loves you anyway?

Another question... you think Jesus loved men more than women? Jesus completely changed everybody's attitudes to women. At a time when women had no social status or standing at all, He spoke with them, ate with them, healed them (even "untouchables" like prostitutes or women suffering from hemorrages) and when He rose from the dead it was women that He saw first, and asked to bring the news to the disciples. He loves us all, regardless of gender.

To answer your final question... it is not okay to just love one gender. I'm a woman, and I love both men and women. Why be prejudiced and exclude one whole gender from your circle of compassion?

If you're talking about sexual love, that's a different thing. When Jesus talked about love, He talked about Agape love, pure unselfish love. I think you're talking about eros, which is sexual love. But don't confuse your little loves for Jesus' vast love that saved the world. Do you understand the difference in scale?

I've never loved anyone like Jesus loves me or you. To compare my love to His would be insulting.

Do you see what I mean?

Anyway, there's a whole bunch of issues here. I don't personally see why you are hung up on being accepted by the RC church... you obviously don't believe anything they do, so why not explore the issues yourself, and let them be Catholic, while you find your own answers?

If I were brainwashed, I would probably know more about the Catholic Church and I wouldn't be asking any questions about the Catholic Church. I don't understand their teachings, as they make no sense to me.

That's a good point, you're definitely not brainwashed!

And don't worry, the teachings of the Catholic church don't make sense to anyone.

So I still don't understand why I'm not allowed in the Catholic Religion but murderers are and Priests that touch children are too.

I don't understand this. If you believe Catholicism is true, surely you are a part of that religion even in the face of organized religion? Sounds more like a sort of conformism than anything else.

RageBeoulve, I'm speaking as someone who was married to a Catholic (lapsed himself, but his mother was extremely devout) for six years, and the way I understand it is that Catholicism, like other mainstream Christian denominations, believes that sex is only for one man and one woman within the bounds of Christian marriage, and anything else is a sin. (At least, this is what I gathered from the three-hour lecture on 'adultery' that we got when MIL found out we were planning to buy a house and live together, and I found later that it wasn't just her view, at all.) Though some within it claim otherwise, it's pretty darn clear to anyone who spends any time in close proximity to it that the Catholic Church also believes that even sex within marriage is really for the purpose of having babies, and that any sexual act that isn't at least potentially fertile is also a sin.

Homosexuality gets a double whammy, because one, you're not of the appropriate gender combo and in the Church's eyes can't be married, and two, nothing you do in bed is going to get either of you pregnant.

That's basically why. Unlike other sexual 'sins', of course, actually being gay isn't a one-off. So the official church view these days is that yes, OK, some people just are gay, but because God forbids gay sex, you are 'called to celibacy'. So if you repent of any sexual acts you've already committed, and don't have gay sex for the rest of your life, you will be accepted.

Bear in mind that a lot of ordinary lay Catholics these days have quietly and sensibly decided to ignore anything the old celibate guy in the Vatican tells them about what they can and can't do in bed, and a fair number of them are more gay-friendly than you might think. However, official policy is that being gay isn't acceptable, and the clergy, whatever they think privately, have to be seen toeing the party line. So if you want to be 'out' and fully accepted by your church, best find a more liberal denomination. (There are, in fact, liberal Catholic churches out there, but I gather they take some finding.)
