The press overwhelmingly bought into the Obama administration's version of events on the attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, according to a new study Friday by the Center for Media and Public Affairs, which tracks news reports.

CMPA analysts said press accounts framed the attack as a spontaneous protest — the Obama administration's initial version of events — four times more often than they called it a terrorist assault, which was what Republicans and even some Democrats identified it as in the days right after Sept. 11.

Initial coverage also focused more on debates over free speech versus hate speech, rather than on security decisions at the embassy, the study found. The Obama administration's initial explanation for the attack was that it was a mob protest against a video that mocked Islam's prophet Mohammed. A mob in Cairo did attack the American Embassy that same night in protest of the video.

BENGHAZI, Libya — More than six weeks after the shocking assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi -- and nearly a month after an FBI team arrived to collect evidence about the attack - the battle-scarred, fire-damaged compound where Ambassador Chris Stevens and another Foreign Service officer lost their lives on Sept. 11 still holds sensitive documents and other relics of that traumatic final day, including drafts of two letters worrying that the compound was under "troubling" surveillance and complaining that the Libyan government failed to fulfill requests for additional security.

When we visited on Oct. 26 to prepare a story for Dubai based Al Aan TV, we found not only Stevens's personal copy of the Aug. 6 New Yorker, lying on remnants of the bed in the safe room where Stevens spent his final hours, but several ash-strewn documents beneath rubble in the looted Tactical Operations Center, one of the four main buildings of the partially destroyed compound. Some of the documents -- such as an email from Stevens to his political officer in Benghazi and a flight itinerary sent to Sean Smith, a U.S. diplomat slain in the attack -- are clearly marked as State Department correspondence. Others are unsigned printouts of messages to local and national Libyan authorities. The two unsigned draft letters are both dated Sept. 11 and express strong fears about the security situation at the compound on what would turn out to be a tragic day. They also indicate that Stevens and his team had officially requested additional security at the Benghazi compound for his visit -- and that they apparently did not feel it was being provided.

Yeah, I kinda realize that thewhitrbbit, it makes me appreciate that I had parents that taught me to question everything, and not simply take what an authority figure says as the gospel truth.

What we're seeing is the effects of brainwashing, pure and simple, not saying it to be offensive, I'm saying it cause it's the truth.

Many people here have been brought up to believe that Conservatives are evil and anyone that isn't marching to left-wing doctrine is some kind of satanist or intellectually inferior.

Well, they knew it was Al Qaeda, because they're the ones that made it up in the first place. I don't trust anything the government or media tells me anymore. To me, arguing this kind of stuff is like arguing football statistics or arguing plots in fictional television shows. Politics, in its current form, is just a way that the elite pits people against each other to distract everyone from the bigger issues at hand and the real people pulling strings. The culture war is no different from the divide and conquer strategies that colonial powers used to gain control. Enjoy fighting over which puppet you want while the master from behind destroys your Republic/liberal democracy from the inside out.

I'm still voting for Obama, though, not because I think it will fix anything, but because of how voting in that half-breed negro will piss off all the closet racists, because that's really what a lot of the Obama hate has to do with, I think.. I also don't like how Romney considers Bain Capital a small business and how he thinks cutting PBS will solve the deficit.

The government is lying about 9/11. Al Qaeda is a bunch of paid actors to give the arms industry an excuse to keep its hands in the public purse, and both parties are corrupt and bought off. If we want to solve the problem, we need to stop buying into the BS. Stop listening to talk radio personalities, and talk to a real human beings. Turn off the the cable news on the idiot box, and go engage in the real world.

You had parents that taught you to question everything but their own sacred cows. That's actually more common than you realize. I'm suspicious of the whole culture war in general, mostly the fact that half the country is split between two labels that are dualistically opposed terms, "left" and "right". That seems rather calculated to me, and I suspect that this is the result of decades of media and cultural manipulation. That plays right into the cave man brain too. "You different from me. I right, you left! black&white! ooooo oooo ahhhh.... ooo ooo ahhh... U-S-A!... U-S-A!"

Even the terms "liberal" and "conservative" are relativistic and should have never been turned into the team names they've been transformed into. Its good to be liberal on some things, and conservative on others. Its all about context. Some things need to change fast, and some things need to stay the same. Only a person with any reverence toward the critical thinking faculties we were blessed with would see this as sound reason.

The truth is both sides are brain washed, and they both see each other as the root of all evil and stupidity. The whole brain washing scheme is the cultural-political paradigm itself. The only problem is both sides are convinced their right. The truth is both of them get fragmented truths that convince them of the superiority of their own position. Everytime I watch MSNBC, they bring up real damning facts about Republicans that Republicans are blissfully unaware of because they never watch MSNBC. ...and everytime I watch FOX News they bring up damning facts about Democrats that Democrats are blissfully unaware of because they never watch Fox News. Its caused a consensus reality split.

Thing is, he's actually right, liberal ideology of "big government," is what's wrecking the country. The financial collapse can actually be tied back to government via the Community Reinvestment Act which forced banks to make loans to people that couldn't afford them, which is also how the housing bubble happened. This artificially generated demand where people were getting loans on properties that they couldn't afford drove up the prices of houses and when the bubble burst we got a financial mess.



I'm actually more conservative than my parents are, my mom is pro-choice; I'm pro-life. The biggest success Obama has had when it comes to my family is that he got both my parents to start listening to Rush Limbaugh; yeah my parents didn't like listening to Rush at all.

I'm the one that got my parents to start to watch Fox News also, prior to that my family used to get news from NBC and MSNBC along with CNN occasionally. What got my family to completely turn away from CNN, MSNBC, and NBC happened in 2006, specifically reutergate...



The term "liberal" is just the latest term that the left is using, they used to call themselves "Progressives," when that brand name got damaged they started to call themselves "liberals."



Actually, you'd be surprised, Fox News has actually reported scandals involving Republicans, and makes an attempt to cover both points of view; something that other networks do not even make the attempt to do.

I would argue that Conservatives aren't nearly as brainwashed as you think, and a perfect demonstration of that was actually on this very forum. Conservatives took the thread mocking Conservatives with indifference or simply laughed about it, some of us even posted things to poke fun at ourselves. Liberals however, went ballistic over the thread poking fun at Liberals and Liberalism; which suggests more fanatic tendencies from Liberals.

I really hate double posting but what just came out is important:

Despite a carefully narrated version of events rolled out late this week by the CIA claiming agents jumped into action as soon as they were notified of calls for help in Benghazi, security officials on the ground say calls for help went out considerably earlier -- and signs of an attack were mounting even before that.

The accounts, from foreign and American security officials in and around Benghazi at the time of the attack, indicate there was in fact a significant lag between when the threat started to show itself and help started to arrive.

According to the CIA, the first calls for assistance came at 9:40 p.m. local time from a senior State Department official at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, to the CIA annex about a mile away.

But according to multiple people on the ground that night, the Blue Mountain Security manager, who was in charge of the local force hired to guard the consulate perimeter, made calls on both two-way radios and cell phones to colleagues in Benghazi warning of problems at least an hour earlier. Those calls allegedly went to local security contractors who say that the CIA annex was also notified much earlier than 9:40 p.m. U.S. military intelligence also told Fox News that armed militia was gathering up to three hours before the attack began.

One source said the Blue Mountain Security chief seemed "distraught" and said "the situation here is very serious, we have a problem." He also said that even without these phone and radio calls, it was clear to everyone in the security community on the ground in Benghazi much earlier than 9:40 p.m. that fighters were gathering in preparation for an attack.

Many of these security contractors and intelligence sources on the ground in Benghazi met twice a week for informal meetings at the consulate with Blue Mountain and consulate staff, and at times other international officials. They were all very familiar with security at the consulate -- and said the staff seemed "complacent" and "didn't seem to follow the normal American way of securing a facility."

Both American and British sources say multiple roadblocks set up by fighters believed to be with Ansar al-Sharia were in place in Benghazi several hours before the 9:40 p.m. timeline and that communications also alluded to "heavily armed troops showing up with artillery." Fox News was told by both American and British contacts who were in Benghazi that night that the CIA timeline rolled out this past week is only "loosely based on the truth" and "doesn't quite add up."
