Uh huh, a loose depiction of Arkansas circa 1957 sure is relevant in 2013.

1950s Arkansas is also relevant to a very complicated intercommunal dispute/feud in a ghetto area of a different continent - in a country where both sides have equal rights in law, so immediately the facts are well off - over 40 years later.

Northern Ireland is one of the last remnants of the British Empire colonies. It's a completely different problem. It's political stuff. In case you want to make a comparison with US, forget Arkansas 1957 and take the thirteen colonies around 1750. That would be accurate.

He's a Northern Irish Protestant. He experienced no U.S.-style discrimination because he's never lived there.

No but I have studied, been in proximity to and borne witness to british orchestrated discrimination.

Studied? Are we talking about the 50s?

It's not the 50s anymore. We're not talking about a guy forced to sit back in the bus.

Not all. As recently as the 80's and arguably up until literally YESTERDAY with the incessant harrassment of Roman Catholic chapels by the Orange Order.

Incorrect, voter registration has nothing to do with it. I have never registered to vote in my life, but I have received many jury summonses.

If you live in Florida and they do not use voter registration to identify potential jurors, then I stand corrected. In most states, as only a US citizen can be on a jury, they use voter registration rolls to identify and select potential jurors for jury duty. If you aren't registered to vote, they can't call you because they don't know you are there.

I do not live in Florida, and you still stand corrected. They do not use only voter registration information to identify potential jurors in Florida or any other state.

 How do people get picked for jury duty? State laws require jurors to be selected randomly from a fair cross-section of the county in which they serve. In Broward County, you are randomly selected from a Florida Driver License Database of US citizens who are residents of Broward County and are 18 years of age or older. If you’ve been picked, your name was selected based on the information listed on your driver’s license, identification card, or voter registration. This random selection ensures that everyone has an equal opportunity and obligation to serve on jury duty.

You're the f*****g idiot. Irish has traditionally been considered a race unto itself.

Until very recently, If you applied for a job in the UK 'White Irish' was differentiated from 'White British' on the equal opportunities monitoring section in job application forms.

Anti Irish racism has existed for centuries since the plantations, mainly among the English. Arguably it still does, particularly among the Unionist community in Northern Ireland.

That's BS. Some negative comments about races in the XIXth century? Well, welcome to the WORLD. That happened in every bloody corner of Europe during XIXth century. Talking about races was trending topic that time. There's not a single corner in Europe that ran free of racial comments. British were looking down at Irish, French were looking down at Italians, Swedish were looking down at Finnish, Austrians were looking down at Eastern Europeans, Russian were looking down at Polish, everybody were looking down at Jews, German were looking down at everybody else and Irish... well, they were looking down at the beer's glass.

And as long as it was a fashion in XIXth, it went out.

Ireland can claim a lot of things about their relation with England. But racial stuff?

C'mon. Get lost.

Well, I don't believe that Irish are a inferior race.

But in your particular case, I will make an exception.

The remark that the Irish were looking down at a beer glass seems like a racist stereotype.
