This is one of the reasons I respect Islam more than Western culture. Modesty is still valued.
I don't care if I'm called a bigot or a cultural imperialist, I will still say: Western culture is superior to others.
"Western" is rather a vague term. Do you mean Catholic or Mormon or Fundamentalist Christian or some of those guys in South America in the jungles who shrink heads or merely the members of your own particular sect?
"Western" meaning the cultural and intellectual traditions shared by the modern liberal democracies; the ideals most clearly articulated during the Enlightenment but further developed since then. I wasn't referring to any particular religious, as Western society is fairly pluralistic.
Wow - I can't believe I'm defending this imperialistic world view - BUT the comment about Islam kind of kicked it off.
The cool thing about the West* is that we have the freedom, enlightenment, and potential to embrace (or at least study) ALL beliefs and perspectives. Many of us even read up on Islam to better understand it and help educate our neighbors. Even more of us are really into quasi-hindu, buddhist beliefs practices like Karma and zen. So much so that there are entire TV shows dedicated to these beliefs. (My Name Is Earl)
Are people living under Islamic rule allowed to read up on Quaker beliefs and form their own opinions? Or Wiccan beliefs? Post-modern Progressive Episcopalian beliefs? How's about your neighbors? The Hindus and Jews? Ever wonder what makes them tick?
*And I guess the West is more or less being defined as non-Islamic, European influenced (?), industrial, capitalist populations. (Finland, Australia, the US, Poland, South Africa, Brazil - blah blah blah - maybe Japan but I'll leave that up to them.)
