Why aren't we allowed to preach about homosexuality?

People keep discussing Leviticus 18, but there is also:

1 Corinthians 6:9–11
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?

Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (ESV)

Here is a good source:

Romans 1:26 covers it pretty well in the NIV version:

Putting that aside though...if The Bible was against homosexuality the way people think, then why has it come down to discussing one line among 1,000 pages and who that line is aimed at? Given the importance people place on this don't you think it would be more explicit than that? Why are you cherry picking this one line and ignoring everything else in that section of Leviticus?

Yes, there are other passages, not just Leviticus 18. Romans 1:26 as well. See my post above.

The names Mary and Miriam are cognate. Mary is not the original Hebrew or Aramaic form that the mother of Jesus would have used. You seem to forget most Quranic references to Biblical figures use Arabic versions of their Hebrew names.

Someone's clueless alright.

You do of course realise, don't you, that it isn't just Christianity that opposes "gay marriage". The religions of Judaism and Islam are also opposed to it, so why does no one mention this? Hmmm... one can condemn and ridicule Christianity in all sorts of ways, because it is now the "trendy" thing to do, but let's never mention all of those other "reactionary" religions that exist.

This is why Christianity sucks and the Bible is garbage.

Do you have to s**t in the punch bowl? It's not as though Christianity is genuinely worse than other religions, you're just closer to it so it's easier to see it's flaws.

Why get married by any reactionary religion? There's Christian sects that do support gay marriage, not to mention some Buddhists have expressed a willingness to recognize them. There's also a host of neo-pagan groups that support SSM.

You also have the option of being married in a civil ceremony with no cultist nonsense of any flavour.

We could get into a discussion about why many Biblical scholars of the past made the observation that the Miriam specified within the Quran is the Miriam we know of as the sister of Moses, and that within the context of the relevant passage there is clear confusion with Mary the mother of Christ. It was mentioned before that the word for God in Arabic is "Allah", but that clearly doesn't mean, when used by those who are Arab Muslims, anyone other than the specific god they happen to worship. Arabic is Maryam, which can be interpreted to mean either Miriam or Mary, so you are at least partially right.

They are literally trying to destroy human nature.

Oh look. Politically Correct hate speech.

And nary a slap on the wrist to be found.

Yes, I noticed it too. Apparently it's okay to insult Christians, but not the members of any other religion (especially Muslims). 'Karathraceandherspecialdestiny', where are you now? Do you have nothing to say about this?

(Sound of chirping crickets)

You both need to grow up.

Maybe. Am I actually wrong though? There does seem to be a double-standard in place when it comes to how the adherents of certain religions are treated these days in the West. I just thought that I would point that out here in this discussion.

Well, maybe people should stop doing that. There is a passage in the N.T. by St. Paul that quite clearly and specifically mentions metaphor, and how he uses it to make a point, and at this moment in time with my crappy memory I can't recall where it was. It is there though. Something about being free or in bondage, and how the two characters mentioned are symbolic, or can be taken as such.

Found it: Galatians 4:24 :D

If Christianity is so against homosexuality why can't anyone simply quote chapter and verse where this is mentioned? It's such a simple request, if you can't do it admit you're wrong.

I've already done that. There are a number of passages in the Bible that mention this very subject, and I linked to them and gave a couple of examples (ex. Romans 1:26).

Why are you going on about this? Your requirement has been met, therefore I am not wrong. Now, will YOU admit to having been wrong?

It's not unfair to suggest that Muhammad/the early Islamic community conflated figures they made reference to, but using 'well in English we call this one this and in Arabic they call them that' isn't a good basis for that argument. Whether or not Muhammad understood the theology of the ancient Israelites (or of contemporary Jews or the various sects of Christianity in the region) well enough to imitate them accurately isn't the same as whether or not he and his followers believe their god to be the god of Abraham.

Considering the extent to which Christians argue amongst themselves about the nature of god, not to mention the disagreements within the Jewish faith, not to mention disagreements between those groups, let alone the other smaller Abrahamic faiths (Samaritans, Druze, Rastafari, Babism, Bahai), etc... it's fair to say if we can accept all the other Abrahamic faiths as worshiping the god of Abraham we can accept that most of the collection of Muslim sects also worship some form of that god.

Believe it or not, it is sometimes hard to find specific evidence like this. Yes, even in this day and age with the internet and all of that. I know for a fact that there was an incident that was widely reported in the press about three years ago of a priest getting into trouble with the law for preaching about how the Bible condemns certain sexual practices like homosexuality, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding it. There is just too much to search through, too many false leads.

Exactly! So what does that tell you? It certainly tells me that he wasn't inspired in any way, that's for sure. It tells me that I shouldn't trust such a person, that his information is unreliable, that what he preaches is false. Confusing Miriam the sister of Moses with Mary the mother of Christ is a pretty BIG mistake, wouldn't you say?

Keep googling and not all versions will mention homosexuality, in fact most wont, you've cherry picked one that does. People are still uncertain as to the exact meaning of the translation of the original words. That it involves some form of immorality isn't disputed but the exact form still is.

Again. Thousands of pages and here we are debating minutiae over single words. If homosexuality really was a sin you'd think it would be more explicit.

Getting back to the actual OP, I'm still waiting to hear where The Bible says homosexuality is a sin and I know I'll continue to wait. However people will continue to make threads stating The Bible is against homosexuality because for some reason being ignorant is acceptable to many people. Not what I expect from a collection of people who are supposedly in possession of "above average intelligence".

Autistic people don't have above-average intelligence.

Low-hanging fruit: Leviticus 18:22.

Aside from the hilarity of Leviticus 18:21, Leviticus 18 is basically a long lecture on sexual ethics. It's unambiguous.

Now you can argue that this needs to be recontextualised as part of a broader message of love and acceptance, but all the same, the Bible contains a strong condemnation of men having sex with men.

So technically it's only gay MEN that God has a problem with and lesbians are OK?

Nope.

Romans 1:26-28 (NIV)

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

Admittedly this is the only reference to lesbianism that I know of. Maybe there are others I just don't know about.
