This proves that Miss de Beauvoir is not only a "feminist", but a *gasp* LIBERAL who pals around with egg-heads and terrorists.

Gloria Steinem is a feminist and she is worth a read her books are great.

Is she anything like noted feminist Andrea Dworkin?

Here are a few of her quotes:

"Marriage is an institution developed from rape as a practice."

"Heterosexual intercourse is the pure, formalized expression of contempt for women's bodies."

"Every woman's son is her potential betrayer, and also the inevitable rapist or exploiter of another woman."

"Romance is rape embellished with meaningful looks."

Or, is she anything like Ti-Grace Atkinson (not a typo)?

"The institution of sexual intercourse is anti-feminist."

Or Catharine Mackinnon?

"All sex, even consensual sex between a married couple, is an act of violence perpetrated against a woman."

"All heterosexual intercourse is rape, because women, as a group, are not strong enough to give meaningful consent."

Or Hillary Clinton?

"Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, fathers, and sons in combat."
(So, the men losing their lives are not considered victims?)

Or Harriet Harman? British Labour Party politician Harriet Harman said on the floor of the House of Commons, when standing in for the Prime Minister:

"There are not enough airports in the country for all the men who would want to leave if I were Prime Minister."
(Imagine the reaction if she were to substitute any other group besides men in that sentence. Or if a man had said the same thing about women. Equality, huh?)

I've read all those- Dwarkin, Atkinson, and MacKinnon commenting on the nature of heterosexual sex in patriarchy
Hillary Clinton speaking at a domestic violence conference in El Salvador, with the full quote being:
"Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, their fathers, their sons in combat. Women often have to flee from the only homes they have ever known. Women are often the refugees from conflict and sometimes, more frequently in today’s warfare, victims. Women are often left with the responsibility, alone, of raising the children. "

and Harman speaking honestly about the number of sexist knuckle draggers in Britain.

What of them? Quote mining two female politicians and 3 feminist authors equals there is no gendered oppression or violence, and therefore feminism is bad, yo?

The thread continues to entertain.

Well, some of us are entertained by your presence...I think.

The thing about those quotes is...they are utterly self-contained sayings. So, you can't pull the "context" ploy. You're braindead if these quotes didn't seem wrong morally or technically to you. (No Vigilans, I did not insult her. It was conditional. And I'm pretty sure the condition wasn't met. It's called "hyperbole".)

PS of course Ragtime would use a misandrist as a example of what a feminist is

Anyone who's read anything of hers would know she's far from a misandrist.
If she was, she wouldn't spend so much damned time appealing to men's empathy for women.
But then, people who prefer to form opinions about entire ideologies and millions of people and the state of the world in terms of the two largest classes on Earth from A COUPLE GOOGLED QUOTES OF FIVE FIRST WORLD LADIES certainly get my salute for tryin'. I admire their courage.

I know right her books are great and do draw such great emotion for men's empathy for women my mom is a fan of her and so am I 8)

They're not self-contained, apparently, because you seem to think it's "morally or technically wrong" to say practices between two classes in the context of vast power differentials are often used as and felt to be acts of domination- that's basic sociological theory, if not common sense.

It's true, though, that I don't subscribe to the bullsh!ttery of ethical objectivism, so I will give you that.

I just don't know how one could react "morally" to such statements as "X and Y relate hierarchically, so their RELATIONS will be hierarchical in nature". It's not even a valid conclusion, it's downright tautological.

Any difference between a feminist and a misandrist must be about the same as the difference between a racist and a hateful person.

Some of these feminists could probably be just as entertaining as Rush Limbaugh on the radio.

I guess the same thing can be said about any difference between a sexist man and a misogynyist.

Oh, and another thing atypical of my wife as a woman is that she once cooked and ate a mouse! Scared the crap out of me when she handed me the plate with the little tail hanging off the side. I was worried about her health, but she researched it beforehand, and logically explained every step of the preparation to me, and she is also a talented cook, so I let her go ahead. No adverse effects.

I was curious how it tasted because they would eat them on survivalist shows. They don't have a lot of meat on them. Found out you are supposed to eat the whole thing. Bones and all. It tasted just like when you open a mouse cage and smell deeply. Pee and wood chips. :/
