Yeah, because Arpaio and company are nuts.

Well, the voters of Maricopa County seem to disagree since they've been keeping him in office for like 20 years. But then again Arizona is a red state so you wouldnt understand.

Quote:
How would Republicans react if a public official were misusing his position to attack a sitting Republican president with spurious charges?

Like we don't get to hear the left screeching about trying Bush for "war crimes".

I don't think most liberals take the "try-Bush-For-War crimes crowd seriously. Very different from conservatives who seem to take Arpaio's charges seriously.

And I'd totally forgotten about the Obama birth certificate thing that Arpaio and his boys were chasing down so I doubt it's at the center of every conservative's mind.

Quote:
And as far as Arpaio's constituents are concerned, voting him back into office for the last twenty years is nothing to be proud of. And no, I don't want to understand red state thinking.

They live there, though. If it's a problem for you then simply don't go there but I doubt you were going to anyway.

Well, if Arpaio is still chasing that Republican wet dream, he apparently figures he can stretch enough mileage out of true believers.

I'm not anti-government, I just hate it when there are enough problems with government that it validly competes with Hollywood for our attention.

As for size of government, I for one believe that sound and sensible laws/regulation is far superior to high head-count.

Efficient government or government done right is adaptive and doesn't need constant fixing or addition because it promotes local problem solving. No government is really just a short time of anarchy before the game of 'spin-the-bottle' lands on one particular form of tyranny/despotism or another.

There are no governments "done right" or efficient. There are no good governments either. There are bad governments and worse governments and that is the only kinds of government there have ever been.

That's 100% right unless that is your a liberal then whenever you try to explain the history of all governments they get very angry and very confrontational. They use the most childish tactics they can to reassure themselves in there dogmatic belief that government in an all powerful tool of good.

It is just one of the reasons many people in other countries find Americans to be so entertaining.

because they have other things to worry about. Like providing silly things, like universal healthcare at point of demand.

As a taxpayer I wouldnt trade our NHS for 100 aircraft carriers.

In regard to helping the unemployed, or providing civil rights, just to name a couple things, government is indeed indispensable.

Yes. An anarchy can be very appealing - until a person has lived in one.

I still maintain that small government with more power at the local level, a little less at the state, and utterly boring at the Federal would be the best way to go. Yes, UCC would need to be kept in place so we don't turn into a patchwork of different countries but generally any day congress is in session or creating more bureaucracies or working to be busy, working to satisfy lobbyists, is a bad day.

Both extremes to me outside of that - whether to the socialist/corporatist end or the anarchist end are a bit paralyzing. Might we occasionally need some major infrastructure built to where it takes nation-wide collaboration? Yes. Pork is a terrible way to do it though and especially when far more of what congress does isn't nearly that useful - better to pay them to stay at home when they're not needed.

Consensus/Direct Democracy (Anarchy) is easily the most adaptive form of government imaginable, the rest are tyranny/despotism. The elaborate system of representatives + checks an balances created is designed to not meet all the needs of the public. Because the small circle of wealthy slave owners who made it wanted to keep their subordinates back in line.
