And where is this "bad idea" in danger of becoming a law? Actually, where is the mass censoring of children's costumes really even a thing, either officially or otherwise?

Again, do you think people need to wait until something stupid that's being agitated for actually becomes a plausible threat before criticizing it? Would you not preemptively speak out against a wrong headed policy being proposed because you thought it was unlikely to succeed? That sounds like dangerous complacency to me.

As to where this is actually happening, are you really unaware of the running skirmishes in schools around the country?

False equivalency; "anti-pc" is just another word for pro free speech, a value that everyone should value, especially people trying to push a minority viewpoint.

Have you seen me say that poor oppressed me is helpless in the face of those who might deprive me of the flag? OK then. You have seen me b***h, complain, carry on, ridicule, and point out stupidity, not to mention disagree and debate. Mainly to whine you have to feel that you are a victim. Does that sound like me at all?

So, it's not just complaining that bothers you. It's complaining and showing weakness that really draws your ire and contempt. That doesn't really help your case, but it does shed some light on your psychology. Gotta say, I'm pretty horrified.

I need to say something in her defense, now that all has transpired. she has been in my corner for a while now and I must say that while she expressed strong opinions, that it was just that- OPINIONS. last I heard there was still a first amendment that protected all speech including unpopular speech. lord knows I've had my share of unpopular moments with at least some denizens here, I just feel rotten that she is not here anymore. can't we all just get along and humor folks now and then? I thought this was supposed to be a support group and not scorpions in a bottle. :|

Yes. Where, and in what capacity is this notion that certain Halloween costumes are "offensive" a credible threat anywhere?

The costumes I was allowed to wear to school were restricted, and it never evolved into being more than guidelines for what costumes were appropriate for a school setting.

Nope.

The rabidly anti-PC people are every bit as anti-free speech, irrational, and reactionary as the rabidly pro-PC people.

I invite both groups to go jump up their own a$$.

My kid's school cancelled all Halloween parties, and replaced them with "Harvest Day". The only costumes allowed are "career costumes", and parents are no longer welcome. The note they sent home explaining this had pictures of jack-o-lanterns on it. I was asked to contribute "Halloween cups" for this non-Halloween party.

nonsense

give example of how somebody that isn't for political correctness is anti-free speech

No, there is one side that is wrong here and they will get called out as little Hitlers until they stop or everybody else thinks they're a joke. The harder you push, the more push back you will get. PC-police are exactly who are going to get Donald Trump elected president, people are tired of being bossed around by these silly women's intersectionality PoC LBTGQAJGA college groups who want to dictate our language and culture.

This is incredibly ignorant. Halloween is a strictly secular holiday for little kids to go out and get so much candy that they could conceivably puke their guts out. Why are we even having this conversation? Because someone, somewhere always has to make a big deal about something. It disgusts me!

I guess OOM is right! Halloween aint the same it was in my trickOtreating days (when LBJ was in the White House).

What reason did they give for this kinda Halloween? Or did they say? Was it PC? Was anti pagan religous correctness? Or was it just keeping the kids safe, or something?

We already have an American version of the universal "Harvest Feast". Its called "Thanksgiving". I guess the school never heard of Thanksgiving.LOL!

Well we can't celebrate Thanksgiving anymore either, that day now is to reflect on our genocide of the American Indian not the mention the yearly mass genocide of turkeys as PETA tells us. We have a new holiday dedicated to the real American religion of consumerism now called Black Friday.

As for Halloween, perhaps it is some weirdo Pagan/Wiccan PC thing but Christians whine about it too. When my sister was in parochial school they didn't celebrate it either since something to do with Satan I think I dunno.

Actually until very recently the day was always intrinsically religious. However, it was originally a Pagan (the religion & people) holiday called, "Samhain". Basically, a Celtic harvest festival. It was redubbed All Saint's Day by the Church at some point in the early to mid-1500's when they appropriated & changed it during their assimilation of the Celtic people(s) and culture(s). IIR, the name "Halloween" ("All Hallow's Eve") as we know it today didn't come about until the early 1700's.

Several schools near us have also changed "Halloween" to "Harvest Day". Strangely, in each case it was instigated & implemented by conservative evangelical Christians & or Catholics who felt "Halloween" was too Pagan because of the witches* and "dark spirits" and such. Clearly, neither history nor irony are their strong points.

* "Witches" were originally nothing more than village midwives/herbalist/therapists who represented a competing religious leadership to the Church and were literally demonized during the cultural appropriation of the region. When they weren't outright slaughtered, that is.

I would, except that's not what I said.

I said the rabidly pro-PC camp and the rabidly anti-PC camp are equally reactionary and equally distainful of free speech.

I've had enough run-ins with both to know one breed of extremists is just as bad as the other.

All extremists are essentially bad. Anyone who refuses to acknowledge that other people have a right to an opinion that opposes their's will gladly suppress free speech in a heartbeat.

you have a right to an opinion, people have a right to call your opinion stupid

it's a false equivalency that exposes your own biases here

I would like an example of how someone that is for free speech is actually against free speech, I don't understand.

When those people who call your opinion stupid also attempt to prevent you from expressing your opinion, they are not for "free speech."

How is anybody ever tried to prevent you from expressing your opinion? Provide one example please. Pretty please, I said please! I could dig thru the hundreds maybe of thousands of other examples with the shoe on the other foot because it has and always has been totalitarian language control enforce up on academia and then the rest of society. Free speech does not exist on our college campuses anymore which are ruled by arbitrary kangaroo courts, an off color comment can get you expelled or fired from your job. They're even calling the term 'politically correct' a microaggression now, it's hilarious.

'And call me an extremist for free speech all you want, I'd wear that as a badge. As Goldwater said "extremism is the defense of liberty is no vice!"
