Not really, they were merely just foot soldiers allowing the robber barons to consolidate their control through eventually bankrupting the country and, thereby, also damaging much of the world's economy (which is based off of the American Dollar...thanks Nixon!) and putting much of the control of where the economy develops from that point on forward in the hands of the private banking interests around the world. The 12 federal reserve banks in the states being the prime controllers of our new world order.
