The lesson of Christian culture
Actually, the "Godification" of humans is believed to be tied to breeding. Before that, you'd have to hunt for food, and you weren't in control of whether you'd be coming back with something or empty handed. Hence the more "natural" inclined cults where animals have power over our lives. But with the advent of breeding, the order is reversed. We are at the top, and we control them. Hence why there are no qualms about an anthropomorphic god at the center of existence.
Oh yes, ever wondered why he's always portrayed as a male? Well, unlike females, we don't go through pregnancy, hence our bodies stay relatively the same for a long period of time while the female's change of appearance is more associated with "change" and fertility (See the Neolithic Venuses, or Willendorf's) which during a period of time where nothing is certain, makes somewhat sense.
