How does one legally change their religious status??

In the United States membership in a church is a private matter and one is not legally registered as a church member, the way one is registered to a political party. In most states where they have party-line preliminary election ballots taking on parties ballot registers you for that party and a change of registration form is required to change the matter.

Thats always mystifying to me why you guys put up with that. Most other first world countries we dont have to belong to a party to vote.

Neither do we. We only have to register as a certain party if we want to vote in the primary elections for that party (ie to select the candidates that party will run). And even that varies from state to state. In Florida, you have to actually be a party member to vote in primaries. In Ohio, you can simply declare at the polls that you wish to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary.

I was talking about the primary elections to decide candidates, not the election that decides who wins. One does not have to register in a party for the real election that decides the office.

Not in north America, no. But some places..

But things such as baptisms do register you as member of a certain faith, and even certain diocese, in the example of Catholics. Regardless of whether or not you have attended church in 50 years, or if you drink the blood of small animals as part of your new faith, your baptismal record is used as a counter to announce the strength of that church.

You have to fight to get them to give you up. You are worth money and influence to them.

That's exactly the problem I face.

Where can I find one of those forms for judaism?

Seriously...there shouldnt even be a process for switching (or even belonging) to a specific religion?

If you want to switch, just switch and update your religious info on facebook or whatever.

this reminds me, i still have to change mine from christian (well last census, my mother was the one filling everything out) to either Agnosticism, or Dischordianism, since they both fit my beliefs to a degree.

The trouble is that Jews are both a religion AND an ethnic group ( I wouldnt quite call them a "race").

So to stop being a Jew in the religous sense - just stop going to temple- and get off all of those mailing lists. Thats easy.

Since religion is the issue what difference does it make that folks still regard you as ethnically Jewish? You can be an Irish Pagan or Black Pagan or whatever. So why not a Jewish Pagan? I even saw a book and Barnes and Nobles that was a guide to "Jewish Occultism".
