Michael is portrayed as God's general and champion. There are lots of statues (in particular the one outside the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral) of him beating the Devil in a fight.

AFAIK the Devil being the angel of music is more of a "that sounds cool, let's make it his job before the fall" modern thing than an old one. I imagine a literal interpretation of Heaven as being like the start of 55 Days at Peking, with every bugger up there chanting and harping and yelling Holy Holy Holy every five minutes. Patron saint of music is Cecilia, which is interesting if you know the song.

I don't believe in the Devil. However, I do agree with a lot of the philosophies of Satanism (LeVay Satanism, where they don't actually believe in the existence of a deity/Satan).

I am a Christian, I see God and the devil as a package deal. If you believe there is a heaven, then there must be an opposite to that. Considering how many times the Bible mentions satan, id say theres a good chance that he exists. All the pain and suffering of this world is led by satan and the demons.

And those of you who feel the need to "attack" christians for their faith; WHY? What did we PERSONALLY do to you? Dont bring up the crusades, I DID NOT have anything to do with those. Why does my faith in GOD put you on edge like that? Are you afraid that He DOES exist and that you are not good enough for Him? If you dont believe in God why are you so threatened by Him and His followers?

I am very fortunate that I have met quite a few
kind nice Christians who have altered my former
sour view of Christianism that Jakaholla had
given me due to his fraudulent ways.

I realised a few years later that Jakahollah
was a fraud and NO Christians that I met
after him were in any way like him, he was
a bad apple who gave me the wrong impression
which made me want to kick him even more.

I am glad I found out otherwise and there
were several kind people to gently and
kindly prove me wrong.

If I could add one more thing:

Don't "attack" me for being a Christian because other "Christians" have done things such as the Crusades, Qur'an Burnings, etc...
It would be no different than me being treated like a murderer because I'm autistic and there is at least one murderer with autism.

It's not like stereotyping/generalizing is a good thing either.

Also, Calvin and Hobbes = Win.

I agree that it would not be sensitive to criticize people for having religious beliefs.

That said, I believe religion itself is merely an effort to resell and repackage morality. While I don't believe in the devil, I do believe in evil as an inherent, incorrigible trait that many people have.

Satan means "adversary" in Hebrew and refers to Satan's role as accuser of mankind; it isn't connected with Saturnus. Saturn is a god of the harvest, rather than a god of suffering - the astrological view of Saturn is based on conflation (as usual between Roman and Greek gods) of his identity with Cronus, who was a bit of a bad guy.

"The devil" is just a collection of natural human traits which the christian church wanted to alienate their followers from, in order to control them, make them more like domesticated workers and less like wild animals.

"Don't do what creatures naturally do freely or you're evil! You've got the devil in you!"

Just another form of social control... Much like today people are branded with stigmatic labels like "mentally ill" and said to be disordered if they don't conform to the expected standards of those who hold power and dictate societal norms. Another arbitrary categorization where one group labels other groups with negative labels that they just made up for the purpose of judging others as being wrong.

Believing in the devil is believing in yourself.
