For real.

You guys sound like you'd have gone for FDR...

We need a NEW New Deal. We'll create jobs by demolishing 20 major American cities and forcing their inhabitants to rebuild them. Prosperity!

Or we could conscript 20% of the population to go help build some giant monument in the middle of Kansas. Or maybe the people at Fort Detrick could release the new zombie apocalypse virus they recently invented. Zombies generally don't need to find work as they just wander street eating people's brains and stuff.

YES!! !! !!

(Ok, I am skeptical towards some of the things done in the New Deal. Even if one likes many of the actions of FDR, he still did a lot of stupid things.)

I can actually think of a handful of Rustbelt cities but... you'd lose the demolition half of the project.

A zombie apocalypse would lower health care costs as well since the treatment for zombie infection is relatively simple and inexpensive.

You could have voted for Hillary in the primary. She was using most of the same advisors her hubby used.

To really get the Clinton years back, though, you'd need Newt Gingrich leading the house again.

I realize perfectly how evil and unfair our healthcare system really is. I mean, penalizing the poor who can't afford health care by making them pay thousands in tax penalties? Prohibiting insurers from including abortion in their individual health insurance policies? It's a disgrace.

Now, before Obamacare, we had Romneycare here in Massachusetts, which was an excellent system which left a smaller percentage of people uninsured and actually covered everything women as well as men needed in health insurance, instead of having politically motivated exclusions. Too bad it's being preempted by Obamacare.

The fact that insurance companies can basically blacklist certain people from obtaining insurance coverage because they have a chronic illness is perfectly fair to you?

And I wouldn't vote for any of the tea-part candidates if you favor abortion rights. Most of them are far-right socially as well.

On a serious note, though, the cities don't need to be demolished beforehand. Infrastructure is falling apart all over the country, because it's been neglected for so long. Unemployment is holding around 10%. A New Deal-type initiative could really help address both problems. Put people to work maintaining roads, bridges, power lines, and sewers, and building wind turbines and high-speed rail.

you are just playing head games with us all. it is not thousands but $765 in tax penalties and there are provisions for hardship exceptions.[/quote] in anycase, it is obvious you have not recently priced real health insurance, the $765 would be an impossible bargain for most middle-aged folk such as this boomer, for whom the cheapest real plans that actually cover something, cost in excess of $765 a friggin' MONTH for christ's sake!

i would be thankful if you would take your "constitution" and put it back on the shelf next to the funk and wagnells - IOW you legalists are like the types jesus castigated for "straining at gnats but swallowing camels."

I think we are in a 1994 situation, I just hope it isn't a literal 1994 situation where the Republicans take control of house and senate, get too relaxed, and start doing the kinds of things that their own base can't stand. The tea party movement at least shows that people are fed up with Dumb and Dumber and having to settle for Dumb - hopefully that'll mean something over the next few years.

yes, when we have a quasi-3rd-world banana republic to be so proud of.

Insurance companies cannot do that in Massachusetts; if you maintain continuous coverage, they can't refuse you for preexisting conditions. Yet another case where a state based solution beats Obamacare.

Socially conservative Republicans made zero headway against abortions throughout the 1980s and 1990s. It's the socially conservative Democrats like Obama that passed and signed the Stupak amendment.

I'm quite familiar with the costs of health insurance, and yes, you're right about the costs. Of course, Obamacare will make those costs go up even further by requiring coverage of questionable things with strong special interests behind them, even while omitting things people actually need.

what do you consider "questionable" things? mental health care? what things do you consider "things people actually need" that are being omitted? i don't believe you when you say these things when what you are really opposed to is the thought that people you consider to be your inferiors are getting a break on your tax dime. you just can't stand the idea that folk who can't afford medical treatment would actually be getting subsidies via your tax dollars. i am convinced you would rather such folk just withered away and stopped being an inconvenience for you.

What if you can't maintain continuous coverage? In all the state's I'm familiar with if you get laid off for an extended time and lose access to affordable employer-provided health insurance you are SOL. Then when something major happens you pay out of pocket and deplete all your savings, property, etc... until you're flat broke. Then you might attempt to apply for Medicaid, but the process is so slow you might just die in the mean time. People who aren't sick and laid off really need to STFU with the obama-care bashing.

And how long will it take for all the state's to get their act together? Also, in today's job market a lot of people don't have the luxury of choosing which state they live in and staying put for life. You have to move wherever your employment takes you. It's an impossible pain in the ass when you have to keep changing your insurance plan, and thus have to keep reassessing your entire course of treatment every freaking year or two because of differing state bureaucracies.
