I wouldn't call France our main or greatest ally either in any sense. Sarkozy is seen as pretty pro-American but before him the French government weren't too big of fans of us and deliberately tried to undermine our interests.(I'm not endorsing those interests btw)

Um... no. You were losing to Germany pretty much the whole time, especially once Russia dropped out.

oh uh, just a friendly warning, don't argue with Orwell, he'd know since he's a history major (am i right?).

In other news, being half-french and having my citizenship (yup, if you have the slightest amount of french blood, you are eligible for citizenship in France), I can't say i currently approve of Sarkozy. =.= He's being a buffoon (Ha, just read about what he said about the Betancourt affair... Everyone knew that she had been liberated before him <.< And by a joint effort of Americans and the local army, to boot) and a fascist idiot. >< At least he's not like his friend Berlusconi, who pretty much OWNS the media, as well as the state. -.-

Although i heard (from a french lady who works with us at the café) Sarko asked his party, who owns TF1, if he could use it. They said no. <.< Whew. Least they're not that corrupt yet. His love for the States is misplaced, if you ask me. =.=

I can't see why Obama would dislike the British, though... They're fun to tease (because of our old rivalries :p ), but hate? I wouldn't. o.O (But then again, i'm technicly a subject to the british crown, heh)

Germany was winning for just about the whole time. And their U-boats were pretty much raping your navy. It got to the point where Britain desperately resorted to a blockage aimed at starving Germany's civilian population in order to end the war. A combination of American involvement (significant more for supplies than actual troops) and some incredibly poor choices on the part of the German leaders resulted in Germany's loss.

Actually, that is techically incorrect. The Crowns of the United Kingdom, Canada and the other Commonwealth Realms are all distinct legal entities, and have been since the Statute of Westminster in 1931. The Crowns are all held by the same individual, but it is legally possible that the succession to one Crown could diverge from the others.

This isn't some academic distinction, either. Consider the practical circumstance of George VI during the period from 1939 to 1945. He had diplomatic relations with Adolph Hitler--not as King of the United Kingdom, but as King of Ireland (who were neutral during the second world war). In his capacity as King of the United Kingdom, King of Canada etc. he was at war with Hitler. In his capacity as King of Ireland he was not.

I missed the bailing out of Ireland. I keep wondering what's next for Lebanon now that it's government has collapsed.

We can overall remain allies with other countries while having disputes over economic and diplomatic/defense policies. So France disagreed with the U.S. over the invasion of Iraq, and Republicans tried to whip up a frenzy against the French. The U.S.'s close allies include Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Israel, France, Germany, Turkey, etc.

MurphyCop, the Irish are as big a lobby as any in Washington. I am not surprised US will bail out Ireland. There are more Irish in the US than there ever were in Ireland. In fact, that was one of the reasons holding back FDR from joining the war in the 40s. The Irish lobby was angry at Churchill and didn't want the US to help UK. After Pearl Harbor that changed. The Irish had legitimate grievances against the UK. As far as the Scots and Welsh. I figured the Welsh don't love the UK, they were exploited longest. I knew some Scottish hated the UK, but do most of them?
Visagrunt, so Canada could have a different king than UK. Why not look into one now.? Who should be king of Canada? They might like a different monarch. When I was fishing or hunting in rural Canada, I noticed quite a few rural Canadians did not seem to like the Royal Family.
