I have the unfortunate task of living in the south, and my family tells me to hide my atheism. Why would they tell me to do that? I have a Constituional guarantee of religous freedom, but apperently southerners are too stupid to realize that. Apperently it could keep me from getting a job. I'm to the point of telling them, " I' m an atheist and there is not a damned thing you can do about it". Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?
If anyone wants more information, let me know.
I wonder if the real reason they want you to hide it is so that they don't feel 'embarrassed' by it. It is the US, so I doubt there would even be a "Are you religious?" question in any interview, because companies don't like lawsuits and stuff.
However, even in the totality in the US (and not localized to the south), atheism is a load. For example, it seems you wouldn't be able to win any election whatsoever if it is discovered that you are an atheists. Satanic lesbians have a better chance of becoming POTUS, I assure you.
Example? 0% of the congress is atheistic. But polls have consistently shown that around 20% of the US population is atheist. Oh, and good luck entering the army because they expect only spiritual people. Though to be fair, the stupidity required to risk your life for a country is probably correlated with being religious.
The worst of all is that this sort of unfair underrepresentation and discrimination is actually worse in other places.
