so you prefer European Nationalism over British Nationalism, French Nationalism, Swedish Nationalism etc etc

The EU is today's Borg. Herman Van Rompuy is the Borg King. He's slowly converting all the countries to form a giant country. Don't like the sound of that to be fair.

The EU was originally created to do what MotherKnowsBest has said, but not anymore. Its becoming a autocratic state for which 27 countries have to bow down to..

I don't fear the Austrians, the Belgians, the Bulgarians, the Cypriots (OK as a place in the sun, I suppose, but quite expensive to holiday there - go to 'Northern Cyprus', which is cheaper and de-facto outside the EU), the Czechs (fantastic people and Prague is so cool! - brave people, those Czechs - and Vaclav Klaus is a hero), the Danes (again, another proud country - fantastic scenery, Copenhagen is clean and beautiful. Expensive, but they like their beer!), the Estonians, the Finns, the French, the Germans, the Greeks, the Hungarians, the Irish (they're our closest neighbours; we share a land border and a very long history - the Republic is, again, expensive but there's lots to see), the Italians, the Latvians, the Lithuanians, the Luxembourgers, the Maltese (I want to go back!), the Netherlanders, the Polish (wasn't keen on Poland when I went, to be fair, but the Polish people we know are lovely), the Portuguese (Madeira is fantastic, in spite of their pisspoor beer they love their booze!), the Romanians, the Slovakians, the Slovenes, the Spanish (the resorts are not my cup of tea but then I haven't seen too much of it outside the major resorts - I suspect the rest of the country is a very different story) or the Swedish (not my cup of tea, but then I was in Malmö so it is unfair to judge a country on just one city). I just don't want to be in a very costly and damaging political union.

You're (deliberately?) confusing being anti-EU with being anti-European.

There is no longer any reason for it to exist. We won't go to war again; we're too interconnected with one another. In fact, if anything, it's the EU causing tensions between countries rather than the other way around these days.

I was a libdem voter, of the centre left variety. But I won't vote for them again. I can't vote labour as they are too authoritarian and don't listen to the wishes of the general public, eg war in Iraq, immigration etc. To be honest, I don't trust any of the parties. They all seem to be in it for power, and will change their policies under pressure from the media. If they actually had policies and principles they laid out clearly before an election and then stuck to their policies and principles it would be nice.

I'd rather we didn't have political parties at all, maybe if everyone was independent we could actually vote for the person whose policies we agreed with the most, and hold them to their promises more effectively.

The problem I have with UKIP is the same for any small party. I can't trust them to stick to their word. The libdems have betrayed their voters, because they want power. How do I know that UKIP won't just do the same thing. They are only likely to get in as part of a coalition, probably with the tories. The libdems went back on their biggest promise over tuition fees. How do we know UKIP won't do the same thing.

Sorry, ranting a bit there.

Problem with that is that you'd end up with 'blocs' of independents in much the same way as you have parties now - so it would be a cruder version of the party whipping system.

To keep it simple without going over 60 years of European history.

In 1949 the Council of Europe was formed to insure peace & human rights.
1945–1957 a number of European trade communities were formed
In 1957 The European Economic Community was created
In 1993 The EEC & some of the trade communities under the Maastricht Treaty formed the EU.

UKIP are a withdrawalist party. I would hope that they restate that a vote for UKIP is a vote to leave the EU, no questions asked.

We flew into Larnaca and drove across the 'border'.

I had considered voting for UKIP this time around, but they are not standing in my part of the world. I have a choice of Labour, Tory, or Green. #sigh

The EU was formed for economic free trade. The Council of Europe was formed for what MotherKnowsBest claimed the EU was set up for.

The Greens are barely eurosceptic at all. UKIP are the only proper anti-EU party there is; apart from the BNP, of course. Oh, and the left-wing NO2EU lot that make an appearance whenever there's a European election.

Yes. I got my postal ballot papers today. 2 tories, 2 labour, 1 green and a partridge in a pear tree.

I won't vote green, they are authoritarian, and I don't believe in AGW.
