To be honest, I find the obsession rightists have with the culinary habits of their opponents quite disturbing. The fact that social conservatives have nothing better to do with their time then b***h about the culinary habits other people is really petty and I've probably heard latte leftist a million times since 2006.

The one thing I would agree with the pinkos on though: if they would try turning high fructose corn syrup into fuel, leave the rest of the corn the world needs alone, and go back to using cane sugar to sweeten food, the obesity epidemic would take a substantial hit and HFCS would be going where it should be, in a gas tanks not people's bodies (this one rubs me wrong because they seem to hide it in everything).

The corn to ethanol business is driving food costs out of sight. There are various inedible grasses and weeds which could be converted to ethanol with greater efficiency.

The only leftist drinking habit I have every tried and found disagreeable was organic soda. I once bought an organic Root Bear from an Anarchist cafe because I felt that I had to buy something given that I had used the unisexual restroom and waited in the place for about an hour to meet someone. I found orangic soda taste quite poor, sure it was better than no soda at all, but it was definitely less better than the Aspertame laced beverages I love to chug.

I make my own soda. I make ginger beer, creme soda, and a kind of spiced apple beer.
I use real sugar and yeast for carbonation.
where does that place me on the political spectrum?

Right but, HFCS is awful stuff. Its not that people really have a preference for it either.
While I am no supporter of corn subsidies or sugar tariffs, HFCS is not much worse for you than a comparable amount of Sucrose. Your stomach turns sucrose into equal parts glucose and fructose. Commonly used HFCSs come in molar ratios of approximately 1:1 (some with a little more fructose, some with a little more glucose). Replacing HFCS with sucrose will not cause less obesity. Our bodies cannot tell the difference.

So what? Corn based sweeteners are totally avoidable. Corn has other uses. It is cattle feed. And one can actually make bread out of it.
