Yes. I tend to agree with Joseph Campbell, an expert on comparative mythologies/religion that if you take something like this literally, you miss the greater spiritual/philosophical truth, and that is that selfless giving tends to promote more selfless giving and thus the multitude are "fed".
In the gnostic gospel of Thomas, which is just a collection of statements attributed to Jesus, there is this:
"If you bring out what is within you, what is within you will save you.
If you do not bring out what is within you, what is within you will destroy you"
I'm not convinced the man didn't wander off and study Buddhism during those lost years.
