There is also talk that there could have been relationships with a few Neanderthals that would have passed on a few of their traits.

Actually, research into the Neanderthal genome has revealed that we as modern humans indeed carry with us a little DNA from Neanderthals, and other archaic humans. I believe between 3 - 5%.
