Who is making generalizations? According to the OP poll a great majority of Republicans are against legalization. So unless the average Republican is represented by less than 25% of the voting block, that seems to be a fairly inaccurate criticism.

I agree with you, but you also have to keep in mind that certain government employees(law enforcement)livelyhoods depend on the drug war. They fear that legalization of pot will ultimately result in the repealing of the Controlled Substances Act and an the disbanding of the DEA. If the drug war ended, thousands of LEOs would be unemployed. Both political parties in the US cater to certain interest groups. Law enforcement is an interest group that allies itself with republicans since they are viewed as the conservative party. I honestly think that Cops see their job as not just enforcing the law, but enforcing social norms.

I don't think I do at all. I know they are an interest group, but do you think they have enough power to shape public opinion? I have my doubts on that point.

Can't people trained for the DEA easily switch over to other customs work and screening or looking for other types of smuggling?

Maybe they could help sort through those big container ships for example. Or be part of a supporting role for Border Patrol?

I always thought in most cases they are paid to say they want it to be illegal. This doesn't just go for republicans.

You can make your own topic of that but I think that is off topic

Wouldn't bother me a bit to legalize weed, especially if I can grow my own.

A lot of the time republicans say how we need to have a smaller government, we don't want a nanny government, Then why is it that most of the time republicans do not want marijuana legalized? We are letting the governement tell us that something, that is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco, should be illegal. It needlessly puts many people in jail. If it was taxed it would give the gov't billions of dollars.

Gateway drug!! ! False. Many studies have proved that invalid.
War on drugs!! ! Let's needlessly throw a bunch of people in jail.

Keep in mind these graphics are from 05 so it is a little dated, from a Gallup poll though. In 05 (if you click on the link at the bottom of this post overall 36% of people think it should be legalized. Depending on who does the poll public opinion is now in favor of legalization 40-50%

Some Democrats don't want to. Legalize pot either.

I never said Republicans do not want to legalize marijuana, I said generally.

And this poll is a little dated which I stated earlier. If you are going by the second graphic which I added later on democrats are not in favor of it either. But there is still a significant difference between the two groups

*Found a better graphic*

I would say because of their religious beliefs; but it is true that anyone who is freedom oriented should be in favor of legalizing pot.
