Here is a more depth and detailed study of authoritarian attitudes and political voting behavior.

do you expect anybody to read 250+ pages of that?

If they are genuinely-interested in the science, then...that would seem logical, yes.

plants "scream" by releasing chemicals into the air, to either warn other plants in the vicinity of impending doom, or to attract predators of whatever is eating the plant. In addition to this, plants exhibit similar responses to that of a human being nervous or "lying" when hooked up to a polygraph and approached with intent to attack/destroy the plant. There is nothing empathetic or moral about eating plants vs. eating animals. The only difference is that the animals respond in a way that's more easily understandable to us when pain is inflicted upon them, which only makes sense, as we are much more similar to other animals(because we ARE animals) than we are to plants. So... enough of that moral crusader garbage coming from the vegetarians.

Darling,
the point isn't whether it objectively IS more moral to be vegetarian or not,
but that people who ARE have increased amygdala activity as compared to those who are not,
in relation to their PERCEPTIONS (which can be flawed, just as anyone else's).

I am so terribly sorry if I made you feel insecure, but you once again have utterly missed the point.

I didn't miss the point of s**t, and I'm not insecure about anything either. I just figured you should know that plants are conscious too. So if you wanna be a real moral crusader, go eat rocks.

The point was about increasing knowledge about more predictive variables related to voting habits than the tired few we usually hear about.
Yet you still continue to embarrass yourself after having been reminded so.
After the little incident in L&D where you lost it, don't you think you should lay low for a few days?
Maybe contribute an actual opinion about the article?

You initiate a thread with the words "What do you think?" and then you throw ad hominem attacks at people when they actually *say* what they think.

Yeah if what they are saying is just asking for information that isn't available in the piece then I have to assume that they are troll, troll, trolling.

If the information isn't in the opinion piece, then perhaps the opinion piece is of dubious value?

I can do this all day 8).

So liberals and vegetarians are genetically superior in your opinion?

No, liberals and vegetarians have different neurological responses from conservatives and omnivores,
in numerous studies.

Is this the get-your-panties-in-a-twist thread, or is it just me?

Well I was asking your opinion, I figure you're partial to these positions.

I find these studies to be garbage btw. What of people who were once liberals and become conservatives or vice versa? What about become vegetarians later in life or become vegetarians for different reasons. Do these supposed 'neurological responses' follow their beliefs or does their beliefs follow their 'neurological responses'?

Even if I was partial to them, it really wouldn't change the science.

The study I'm thinking of sampled only vegetarians who were such for ethical reasons, because the question was of what correlation, if any, might exist between empathetic response between vegetarians and meat-eaters. The Brain Functional Networks Associated to Human and Animal Suffering Differ among Omnivores, Vegetarians and Vegans

I think the others are fascinating questions. I've evolved so much over the years in what I believe, as have most people I know who follow politics or have an interest in ethics. No idea what the common elements might be from a neurological point of view.

If I HAD to say, the beliefs are set early on in life (much as religion is), and then when you surround yourself (either deliberately or no) with people/ideas which are similar, the synaptic connections are reinforced. Maybe people whose beliefs change are more often exposed to different ideas, and at an earlier age. The studies I've seen on the subject suggest differences between liberals and conservatives correspond with personality differences which emerge at an early age:
Personality: Differences Between Liberals and Conservatives

Here's another on how people (conservatives more than liberals) contort reality to suit their beliefs:
Moral Evaluation Shapes Factual Beliefs

Are you implying the studies are "garbage" because you're personally-interested in other variables which weren't the subject of study in those particular instances?

Isn't that kind of...dumb?

Also, what's with referring to the differences observed as "supposed"? Do you take issue with the reliability of fMRI's?

OP, I really didn't need to hijack the thread, but I think the defensiveness with which people react to studies of political beliefs, or ethics, etc, is kind of fascinating.

What makes you think I'm embarrassed? How did I "lose it?" Because I told you to go make a sandwich? Because I pointed out how you just love jumping down men's throats for any little thing you don't agree with? Because I pointed out how you're quick to call every man you don't agree with a sexist, what?

Anyway, I already did contribute an opinion. The article is horse s**t.

I say it's important to question and be curious about everything, but I don't give two s**ts about obama or stupid ass romney. They're both just puppets, so neither one of them really matters. All this article is trying to do is polarize americans further.

Because that's how you imagine it. Seriously. You should cool it with flying off the handle in irrational rages, FYI.

By...plugging a book on the science of common features of democrat vs. republican voters?

It is not of dubious value if you keep responding to it . Trolling is a art.

Anyhow, if you actually provided the results of a peer-reviewed statistical study in a respectable scientific journal which supported your claim, then perhaps I would stop trolling your thread. A link to a 250+ page long book is just lazy...

How do we know this? For the past two decades, pollsters have been asking people what values they think are most important to instill in children. Is it more important for kids to develop a sense of independence or to respect their elders? To be curious or to display good manners? As we spelled out in our book, “Authoritarianism and Polarization in American Politics,” studies have repeatedly shown that answers to child-rearing questions reflect fundamental personality differences that, in turn, have become perhaps the most important explanation for our polarized politics.

These personality differences tell us who supports gay marriage and who doesn’t, who favors immigration and “amnesty” and who opposes them, as well as differences on a host of other issues. Individuals who cherish independence and curiosity tend overwhelmingly to be authority questioning, whereas those who most value respect for elders and good manners tend to place a premium on order and hierarchy. White respondents’ answers to these questions illuminate powerfully their views about politics. It turns out that whether white Americans support Obama or not, vote Democratic or Republican, has more to do with how they think about raising children than with their socioeconomic status.

What do you think?

We don't on the basis of class, gender, and race, we vote the way we do because of our values, the educated white, the wealthy one, and the one making less then 10 grand a year may value authority, but one can have many values, and there is a gradation of importance assigned to each of them that some may shine stronger then others.

I value life, but some things are more important then life, and worth giving up life for in fighting for it, such as liberty. I value authority not in the all encompassing, do anything you want dictator, and I also ask questions... as do many people who value authority do. Hierarchy is not the reason we value the elderly... we value them because we have the world we have today because of them and their sacrifices.

It all comes from the fact that the Left cannot understand why or how people can be conservative. You can try to color in the lens by which we view the world, but the only place that hierarchy matters is on the level of the political establishment, and that goes for both parties. For the common man, its our values that make us conservative, and the major uniting factor.

yea I don't know why leftists don't see the misuse of science to advance their political agenda as offensive, if a study came out about why any moron would vote for a Democrat I'd also think of it as abusive.

Because that is the implication... why do you the poor republican vote conservative when all these millionares are stealing your wealth, or why do you the educated republican vote conservative when your degree-holding *** should know better, or why do you, the republican in the scientific establishment draw conclusions that run counter to our agenda... whose payroll are you on? EIther we're mislead and corrupted by misinformation, stupid, or have bad intentions(greed, etc.), that is the typical conclusion because they can't fathom us voting the way we do for any other reason.

I was never trying to imply anything. I just think it's a piece of research that has a little bit of value and you know pointing out right wing authoritarianism isn't the same as claiming that left wing authoritarianism doesn't exist, right? It's also not the same thing as trying to make a conspiracy theory that you are all lying, deluded, bought off, etc.
