Okay. I think that I perceive from whence Pat Robertson is coming on this issue. Ordinarily, he doesn't give a damn about women. He would love nothing more than to abolish Planned Parenthood. And, I am sure that he did not approve of slaves running away from their owners in the South.

But, it is largely Christians who have organized the Underground Railroad from North Korea through China to freedom elsewhere.

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethi ... ees/10055/

Like our runaway slaves, who had to keep on running until they reached Canada after the Dred Scott Decision, runaway North Koreans generally can't tarry in China. It was Christians who were largely guilty of running the American Underground Railroad, too.

Mr. Robertson wants to appear to be on the right side of this issue, which also gives him a chance to wag his finger at Communists, Atheists and Liberals. It keeps the donations coming.

Also, the Hudson Institute, which is among Mr. Robertson's allies, is selling a book on the topic:

"Leftover women" huh?
It's OK, you can still just reheat them and they'll taste just fine. Unless they're breaded, then they kind of suck, but a bottle of Buffalo sauce will take care of that.

it looks like they have it under control. even the first article you linked made it clear that there weren't actually any leftover women - it was just a product of the Chinese propaganda machine.

Go to the website of China's official Feminist organization, All China Women's Federation, and search for "Leftover"

http://www.womenofchina.cn/html/folder/ ... q=leftover

Quite a lot of interesting articles. The first one deals with Leftover Men. Given the rising gender imbalance, they say that "the leftover men will concentrate in the class of low-income people in the future and it will aggravate the trafficking in women, the mercenary marriage and the sexual crimes in backward regions."

Interesting article on Mercenary Marriages here: http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/i ... 094846.htm

Anyway, back to the All China Women's Federation and the Leftover Ladies

The second article, on Hong Kong, seems to be more in tune with Hyperlexian's thinking.

The third and further articles deal more specifically with the Leftover Ladies of China, and some of them get more and more comical.

The Startling Plight of China's Leftover Ladies wrote:
The Spicy Love Doctor was running late. A well-heeled crowd one recent Sunday afternoon had packed into the second-floor lounge of Beijing's Trends Building -- home to the publishing offices of several glossy magazines, including the Chinese editions of Cosmopolitan, Esquire, and Harper's Bazaar -- to hear Wu Di, a contributor to China's Cosmopolitan and author of an alluring new book, I Know Why You're Left. The poised, professional crowd, outfitted in black blazers, leather boots, and trendy thick-framed glasses, was composed mostly of women in their mid-20s to mid-30s -- primeCosmo readers and all there waiting patiently to hear Wu, who typically charges $160 an hour for "private romance counseling," explain their surprising plight: being single women in a country with a startling excess of men.

... "In the past, there was no such word as sheng nu. But today women have more wealth and education -- they have better jobs, and higher requirements for men." She reflected: "Now you want to find a man you have deep feelings for who also has a house and a car. You won't all find that."

...What she was really pointing out was just how much better today's Chinese women have it. Thirty years ago, a marriage certificate was a passport into adulthood. "Until you married, there were no basic human rights. No right to have sex before marriage. No house allocated by your danwei [government work unit] before marriage." Today those barriers have crumbled, with rising sexual freedom and a booming private real estate market. Why marry unless you find someone just right? "The future is different," Wu predicted, waving her arms for emphasis. China's big cities will be filled with sheng nu. "Those who can bear the shortcomings and sufferings of men will get married," she concluded. "Those not, single."

...All this grand theorizing was not remotely what Sabrina, a slender 26-year-old with sexy librarian glasses, wanted to hear....Sabrina was there because she truly wanted to get married, and by her own anxious calculation, she feared she had about one year left. She had a graduate degree from a good university, held a respectable job in marketing, and was reasonably attractive. It had never occurred to her that finding an appropriate partner would be a struggle. Did I know any unmarried men? she asked. And if so, I should probably tell them she is just 24.

City's Old Maids Feeling Lonelier than Others wrote:
Single women in Shanghai are feeling lonelier as "old maids" compared to their counterparts in other Chinese cities, suggests a new survey released on March 6 ....

....73 percent of single women blamed few chances to meet men for their "leftover" status, which was most perceived as a derogatory term by female Shanghai singles.

Sixty-two percent of single men, however, said that women are single longer due to the higher standards they set for a potential spouse.

After Shanghai ladies, single women in Sichuan and Beijing, meanwhile, feel the next lonely, said the survey.

Women in Tibet as well as those from Qinghai and Shanxi provinces, however, were not weighed down by a companionless feeling, according to the index used for the report, which showed their scores below the 100-point threshold.

However, if you review the Chinese women who signed up with the company--not much in the way of A-Quality women. Leftover women, yes. But, more like the leftovers of the leftovers. A lot of divorced women in their 40s who have one kid, and a basic high school education.

The 27-year-old A-Quality Leftovers are most likely enjoying their Sex in the City libertine lifestyles, and see little point in marrying a 60-year-old American with a bit of money to burn.

I'm with you on that one. If it's truly inedible, give it to a dog or use it for compost.

Viagra works pretty well as 'sauce' for the leftover men. Of course, one has to be careful not to get pregnant by them, given the increase in point-mutations in older men's sperm.

My father was 55 when I was born, which, okay, might explain a few things about me. But, he didn't need viagra to do the job. :wtg:

By the by, fatherhood in old age may confer a few advantages.

1. In the USA, Social Security is very, very nice to the children of retired and disabled workers. For people who aren't on social security, a new child can be a huge financial burden. If you are on social security, then you get a 50% pay increase.

2. A father who doesn't have to work may actually have time for his children.

I had no idea there were that many divorced women in China...are you sure this is accurate information? Seems like most Chinese women who are looking to get hitched are young and never been married and if they are good looking, they might try for a rich foreigner. Why not?

I saw women in their early twenties on that link you provided...would they be the leftovers of the leftovers?

I just took a quick look, and noticed a bunch of middle-aged divorced Chinese women. Younger Chinese women had asked that their profiles be removed. So, maybe there is a good selection of hotties in their early 20s--I wasn't really shopping.
