There was an incident a while ago in Portland when a 'companion' dog attacked someone else's dog on the bus. I don't remember if the attacked dog was a lap pet or a service dog, but it was reportedly a pretty horrific incident.

edit: here it is. A Pomeranian was killed by a rottweiler. The latter wasn't a service animal, but the owner expected not to be challenged.

I'm amazed they let pets ride the buses.

Public transportation is in europe very common, but normally there are rules that you are forced to leash your dog AND have that typical mouth-barriers, when taking it with you on public transportation. By doing so, there hardly can be any incidents.

In the Netherlands you have to buy a train ticket for your dog... I didn't believe it myself when I heard it.

A small dog might get away with riding a bus but not a fifty pound Mastiff or similar-type pet. They would be turned away by the driver unless trained as a service animal and people do try to sneak their pet on that way from time to time.
