I see no reason for revolution. Things change. Nothing is permanent. Learn to adapt. Life is never going to be ideal. I have everything I need or want. I am no oppressed. I can say or do anything I want to say or do. The most oppressive element existing in our culture is religion.

So the thrust of your argument is that the world be damned as long as you have your creature comforts

I have very little in the way of "creature comforts." The world, and its inhabitants evolve. Always has and always will. If one lives a simple life and dsn't get caught up in the rat race, it is possible to not be affected by what irks you so much. And I will not allow those who get involved in the "rat race" to draw me in when their own choices bring discontent into their life. You probably have more "creature comforts" in your linen closet than I have in my entire residence.

Don't allow yourself to get attached to this life and its traps. Nothing you "own" is yours other than your own actions, thoughts and words.

I dont actually have a linen closet. I just have a drawer full of tattered rags that I use as an elaborate loincloth.
Anyway lol religion isnt the most oppressive element in our culture at all, ideaology is. Religion is just one type of ideaology. Also you kind of have expressed the fact that the world is responsible for its own mess. For all of us to live the live or comparative freedom we enjoy much of the rest of the world is forced to live in poverty and continual wars exacerbated by US interference. I love the idea of going off the grid and removing myself from society but ultimately using clean water gas electricity shops and public roads makes me just as responsible for society as anyone else.

An interesting way of putting it but I agree, I am not a violent person nor do I want to hurt anybody lets say something like the Arab Spring or the color revolutions happened here I probably would be on board.

It there was a rebellion against the government, why not my life is going nowhere anyways....rebellion or not. Or I can keep hoping for the fairly unlikely zombie apocalypse.

I too have this really morbid hope that we'll have a nuke or some other sort of apocalyptic catastrophe. Kinda messed up but realistically that's what its going to take to make "New Rome" fall.

Of course im not going to do anything about it, thats why its a morbid hope. Still I always pack lightly just in case...

To me this smacks of being too susceptible to the view of decline, due to media hysteria. Reality on average our standard of life is greatly improved from the past in the developed word, even if it fluctuates a little.

The problem is we face living in large groups called societies bring illnesses like neurosis, we need to address this.

Yes I would say it is messed up and self-defeating. It is the same kind of logic used by spree killers, or people who kill their children before killing themselves.

Its not spree killer logic at all, its the logic of the villager who helps erect a sky high statue to their tyrant godking and then in a moment of clarity realizes what it stands for and makes supplications to the gods of thunder to tear it down.

I also think that our quality of life has improved but we've paid and are paying the price which is more government. Many people will find this an acceptable compromise but consider the fact that we are moving inexorably toward a condition where the state will become truly totalitarian. Politics is complex and is far more than old white guys with steepled fingers and global designs. That notwithstanding there is a perceptible move toward a world where freedom is eroded completely. Political activism isn't going to change anything since the basis of our governments is fundamentally and irredeemably flawed.

I agree with this. If there are social problems that need to be tackled, then they should be confronted from the perspective of sympathy and hope.

The OP sounds seriously depressed, and I think you really need to take care of that before you think about changing the world. Nothing good has ever come from despair, except for maybe a few paintings

Sympathy and hope? Are you really that naive? Were veering between 2 extremes here. In order to reform government through a non violent approach we will need to have an unprecedented level of unity of opinion and purpose sympathy and hope are not going to accomplish this because most people wont even give up their Nike trainers for the sake of abused children in sweat shops. Sympathy and hope is the kind of trite buzzwordage employed by politicians to make people feel ennobled and mobilised without having to actually do anything other than applaud.

I can't see people rising up against the scenario you mentioned or anything like it. As long as enough people are living in relative comfort to what they are accustomed to they they won't do diddly but express "outrage". The only scenario I see what could be called insurrection would be the result of a chain reaction started by one incident that grows out of control.

What do we do? Politics sucks, especially in the western world.

As long as people have thier comforts nothing will be done since there won't be enough incentive to change. If it does happen it'll be almost unintentionally as a result of something else.

I'd be hard pressed to believe that politicians paying lip service is something that's only been going on for less than 30 years.

They had the USSR to collectively worry about back then.

It'll be bigger and even more useless 30 years from now. :(

More I can name?

That's just technology. All we can do is adapt.

So, is it thought that if something happened like a total financial collapse (maybe) where everybody were left without their government goodies they feel entitled too, would they learn a lesson?

Nope people would simply survive as best they could until a new political order arrived. Indeed people would cry out to be lead. We dont know any different

I would join a politically rebellious group that has a extension in Portland.

I was thinking about all those secession movements around the US, and wondered how a major secessionist revolt can turn out. I just like the idea of a state forming it's own country and culture.

/\ If there were a total financial collapse secessions could very well follow.........or maybe not. We won't know until we know but a situation like that would provide a climate more favorable to secession than no financial collapse.

What government 'goodies' they feel entitled to? Are we talking about big business thinking they are entitled to all the tax breaks in the world and even heavily influenceing government policy....or are we talking about people in poverty who use welfare programs as they are intended? I see your point with the first senerio, but other then that things like food stamps or unemployment or various government programs that help people with financial troubles are not exactly 'goodies' more means of survival.

But it will be an intresting experiment if things collapse in that manner will we just kill each other off, or attempt to help each other....will people who cannot find employment thrive better.....perhaps, I mean I can't hold a job but I know how to do things that could be useful for survival that some people with jobs might be clueless about. It would force a lot of people to learn what its like to scrape by and stuggle due to lack of proper resources and what not, people would have to learn to cook maybe even on open fires, live without air conditioning and perhaps beer that's not cold 8O. But no I don't think it would teach all those 'leeches' on welfare a lesson at least not anything useful, they would just be without the government help....which could make life more difficult, but everyones life would be more difficult in such a collapse.
