Professional Victims: Anita Sarkeesian, Zoe Quinn, et al.
I don't want to completely steer this thread off course, but:
So, that's fair. I am admittedly unaware of what would be the most promising methods of attempting to fix the problems other than being vocal and trying to rally a fan base of gamers, who would then [in theory] help dictate the market by buying the games or not? Or is that not how it should work? I' m not being facetious I'm just not clear on what you are specifically getting at, because that's actually just hurrying along what you suggest would naturally occur here:
right? or no?

Well one I am skeptical that this is such a big problem and that female gamers are underrepresented, I think the people that are raising the issue here more often than not are people on the outside looking in. I think from just the number standpoint, that the idea than women make up anywhere near 50% of "gamers" is just completely inaccurate. I believe those studies basically count anybody that has played any game or plays games on the cell phone or facebook as the same as people that play console or PC games which I believe are still overwhelmingly male.
Now that's not to say any criticism on the subject isn't legitimate but I feel that a lot of Sarkeesian's is just confirmation bias. It's almost all cherry picked and taken out of context, she might be a crook personally but the point of the argument is more to draw attention her ideology than to be concerned for facts or realistic solutions. These feminists critics of video games don't come off as much different than Jack Thompson and not to many shed tears for the abuse he got.
People that kill others rarely threaten them in such a way.
Wrong way of looking at it.
What matters is "what proportion of death threats are real?", not "what proportion of murderers warned their victims beforehand?"

Zzzzz....
Sorry you were talking about gamers.
It is a actually we documented and misogyny that fairly direct sexual harassment, is common place in many these gaming circle, and you can pretty much pose as a woman and find this out.
However, many games that level of interaction isn't really a requirement. I always say be as anonymous as possible online.
But then again I'm antisocial, so obviously I don't need that s**t.
That is not meant to excuse people behavior, just good advice.
Regarding whether they are milking it. Isn't that want most charitable causes do, pluck at the heartstrings? That doen't necessarily mean the cause is not good.
As far as I'm concerns it is what she is doing with the money that matters. I would think that donators would like to know that. I don't know enough about them.
The moral bar is set pretty low as far as judging people using the sympathy card. That is a well trodden road, not always illegitimate.

Agreed, and unfortunately the mask on anonymity makes this much harder to punish, but there have been some systems implemented with success, like League of Legends' Tribunal. Besides that the only other thing can be done is to teach kids to treat other people as people and not unfeeling objects in schools.
This is a much harder criteria to use than might be expected: The donations are in place to help her focus on creating the videos without having to worry about working in a job at the same time. They're paying part of her food, rent, water and electricity - to know if this money is well spent we would have to know the time she spends on research and video production, which is impossible. My biased opinion is that the videos seems to come out an alarmingly slow pace, but I'm not one of her backers in the first place.

All I see is a dubious character making conspiratorial claims while smoking what seems to be a marijuana cigarette. Then he wants people to donate money.
If these threats have been faked, then that's a bad thing. The point remains that all of these people have been the victims of real threats, and that's much worse. I'm not familiar with Jenn Frank, but Anita's "crime" is "being a bit annoying" and Zoe's is "cheating on her boyfriend". Neither of those things warrant the backlash they're getting. Put simply, this disproportionate focus on Anita and Zoe, rather than on the people who are actually doing something wrong, is perverse.
How do you think journalists get details on cases?
Unless there is considered a serious threat, a lot of details are public. Some details may be left out, but a lot are public. They may require some paperwork to be filled for a lot of the stuff, but most is public records. Even the most classified police cases are supposed to be opened to the public after 20 years (in many places.)

He is talking to a police officer, who you can find through google. Which "conspiratorial claims"?
Anita Sarkeesian was also found to have stolen footage from other people's Let's Play Videos... And yes, she did doctor images on occasion.
I remember that in one of her videos, from a game she actually decided to play, she went out of her way to kill and defile(I think that's the term she used, basically she dragged the bodies around) female NPC's at a major point reduction and claimed that the game forces you to do so. In actuality the game discourages it in multiple ways: it is a harder way to complete the level, major point reduction, you have to go out of your way to do it instead of just walking down the hallway towards the objective.
Activism against the internet always results in disaster!

Like the policeman said it is hearsay, so that video is also hearsay at the moment. Only time will tell.
Also there is some question it seems as to if she was dealing with the police or the FBI becuase of the child porn.
Oh for the love of God. Anita Sarkeesian has done absolutely nothing except make a video series after being funded by Kickstarter campaign. She's not trying to censor games, she's simply making a critique of some common tropes in games. With respect to her most recent videos, she's not even again the portrayal of sexual violence in games, only just as long as the topic gets the respect it deserves.
As for Zoe Quinn, basically her ex-boyfriend posts a blog post about her cheating on him (with five different men, no less), and then she gets slut-shamed by cyber-mob of misogynists on the internet, as though her infidelity has absolutely anything to do with anyone else except her and her ex. These misogynists hide their misogyny behind a thinly veiled smokescreen, claiming that she slept with a video game journalist so that he could write a good review of her game that doesn't even exist, i.e. he never wrote it. If it was an ex-girlfriend making a blogpost about how her boyfriend cheated him in order to shame him, those same exact men would be proclaiming how much of psycho stuck up b#!ch she is. Jeez.
Leave these 2 women alone, they've done nothing to you.
Completely wrong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuRSaLZidWI&#t=05m35s
The blog post was made to out her as an emotionally abusive sociopath. As someone who posts in an ASD forum it seems strange to me you couldn't care less about her actions and paint it as just the revenge of an ex - when it was in fact the boyfriend who broke it up because he couldn't deal with the abuse anymore.
Projection with no evidence.
