We'd have to agree on what constitutes spankings and mental illness before having any kind of meaningful dialogue on this, and that'll never happen. Some peoole consider the mildest spanking or a smack to be a "beating" and owning a "gas guzzler" to be a mental illness.

As for spanking,I guess you forgot that I did spank my kids.It depends on the kids,some kids will do timeout in a corner,or extra chores.This isn't about a kid being an obnoxious brat,but one with a real illness.Do you think you can just spank the schizophrenia out of a child?

No I won't give dumb people credit.During the ice storm here the hospitals were filled with people who thought it was a good idea to run a gas generator in the living room.Maybe you underestimate the stupidity of the masses,but I don't.I am surprised at you Skippy.It's what caused the nanny state that you abhor.People that don't have sense enough to not text and drive,leave a dog or child in a hot car,drive drunk,people that watch Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Sure,I certainly didn't like some things Obomber did.But this should really worry people with special needs kids.What if funding for their health care is taken away becuse an idiot thinks spanking cures a valid mental illness?

My brothers and I got those beat downs, even if I wasn't the one who triggered mom's hairpin trigger of a temper. If none of us brothers owned up to the incident, all of us got our asses beat to a bloody pulp. Once dad got home, we got our bloody beat to a pulp asses beat again to worse than a bloody pulp with his leather work belt that had a large, solid brass buckle attached to it. With incidents like that, it was extremely painful to sit for the next 9 months (and we were not allowed to sit on a pillow to ease the pain.)

Forgive me for being anal, but those particular Mennonites had originally hailed from Switzerland, but had fled to the Palatine to escape religious persecution. Most of the original Palatine Germans were Lutherans and Calvinists.

That's awful,sorry you had to go through that.My folks were gentle with me but did swat me with a fly swatter when I was acting out in a brat like fashion.I was more grossed out by the fact it had smushed flies on it than the sting of the swat.Only once did I get hit with a belt,another relative did it and it was not helpful at all.I don't even remember what I did wrong,but I sure hated them after that.
I spanked mine with an open hand on bare bottom,when they got older I did switch them on the legs a few times.A small peach tree switch.They were both being REALLY naughty.It was only used as a last resort.When they got bigger it was more effective to take away phone privledges and ground them.

Corporal punishment for children who knowingly do something wrong is something that can be debated. Physical punishment for crying, emotional distress, or meltdowns is child abuse. It is something that CAUSES mental illness. I'd say it's right up there with raping children. Bastards deserve a curb stomp.

I think Bannon is equating mental illness with bad behaviour. This is an easy mistake to make because the behaviour of the mentally ill is often bad; but the answer is not hitting them. Hitting may or may not be effective with NT children; I don't know, I don't have kids. But hitting a kid who is acting out because they are suffering from mental illness is like hitting a kid who has diabetes. It is not helpful.

To me Bannon's statement is an indication of a poor understanding of the treatment of mental illness.

Also don't forget this is the same person who said back in the year 2000 that all the money in schools was being wasted to special education students and they were a burden on the system and using up lot of their money for them for being in mainstream. I don't remember his exact words. But I was pissed. How dare anyone say I am a waste to my school's money and a burden and I don't deserve the help I got in school because I am a waste.

But yeah what if he wanted to cut out funds for kids with disabilities in the education system and just have the schools abandon them?

Also don't forget this is the same person who said back in the year 2000 that all the money in schools was being wasted to special education students and they were a burden on the system and using up lot of their money for them for being in mainstream. I don't remember his exact words. But I was pissed. How dare anyone say I am a waste to my school's money and a burden and I don't deserve the help I got in school because I am a waste.

But yeah what if he wanted to cut out funds for kids with disabilities in the education system and just have the schools abandon them?

Every time I freaked out or spoke out about obama was cause he was trying to or doing stuff. People are freaking out and trump still has 2 months before he's in office.
