Another thing I'm doing here is sparing a thought for people who want to try to read the thread and catch up. I get the sense that some posters either have no awareness of this or will deliberately sabotage a thread they don't like.

I just thought of something: I find political debates on WP interesting because I find people who genuinely disagree with me, and can back it up with sources, which makes it possible to learn something. IRL, you're usually stuck with people who generally agree with you, or people who will police you for slightly disagreeing with them. Either way, you don't learn anything.

I don't know. I had some good conversations, but lots of people seem to want to just derail threads. People will choose to respond to someone whom they know they can goad into a frenzy. Then the thread deteriorates into "I didn't say that" "You said worse than that"

I refuse to engage with that nonsense. The people doing it know that it is a barrier to discussion, and I don't know what to think about the people who fall for it every time.

When I bring up a question and get a response which assumes that most people are kind and decent, or even selfishly kind and decent in some agreed sense, I reply.

If I get told that I am part of some group of jerks, or hear more about Obama snorting pixie dust off baguettes or some other weird irrelevancy, what is the damn point of trying to deny it any more? I've convinced everyone who can be convinced, or else I have not. Stay tuned, I guess.
