It's a curious thing that Jesus never spoke out against slavery, conquest by genocide, and the subjugation of women as second-class citizens.

Jesus also didn’t write his own experiences down. Others did it for him.

All of his apostles were men.

Jesus’ apostles did, though...
Yeah ... they sure did ...
The Apostle Paul wrote:
"Let the women keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but let them subject themselves, just as the Law also says. And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church." (NASB, 1 Cor. 14:34-35)
Yeah ... really progressive guy, that Paul...

At least four people wrote accounts of Jesus' "works" which vary---sometimes rather dramatically.

Isn’t that silence deafening?

I misread your post. LOL

Yep. Pretty progressive.

Christianity is a religion, primarily, of the 1st through 4th centuries AD.

If people followed it literally, in the spirit of the 1st through 4th centuries AD, it would seem grotesque today.

Just like Sharia law, as practiced in such places as Nigeria, is seen as being grotesque by many. Sharia law is primarily from the medieval period, and reflects medieval values.

Ephesians 5:22:

“Wives, submit to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.”

Another reflection of the values of the 1st century AD. I believe we have grown from that.

Of course, but some do try to follow it as literally as they can.

I think being a liberal Christian poses some challenges. I suppose it’s more about following the spirit and intent of “Christ” than getting into the nitty gritty. I still don’t fully comprehend it, though.

Not in this day and age!

That's why people should really STUDY the Bible....rather than merely go to "Bible Study."

I diligently read the Bible which is why I dislike it so much.

I do understand that it’s a product of its time, but it still has a negative impact on society, especially in fundamentalist groups.

Being from a fundamentalist religion, we weren’t too far off from that. The man is the head of the household, makes all major decisions, and is supposed to correct his wife over spiritual matters. The wife can’t pray aloud in her husband’s presence. Abuse is not considered grounds for divorce and women are often encouraged not to separate from abusive husbands. I could go on and on, but I won’t bore you. LOL

I know you diligently study the Bible, and that you don't merely engage in "Bible Study."

"Bible Study" is often a euphemism for sessions which confirm the many archaic notions of the Bible, without actually making a serious inquiry into them--a "study," if you will.

My brother, who is also an atheist, has almost encyclopedic knowledge about the Bible. My interest doesn’t extend that far, but I’m really interested in how it impacts people.
