Fun & silly game as a kid. Likely light pushing/pulling pressure on the planchette based on subconscious thoughts among the users. Yes/no questions worked better. I remember some weird combo answers. What color will X's hair be at 50? Blu.i.u.i.u...ite (We called that as blue & white.)

A Ouija board is simply a conduit to the subconscious. Like a crucifix or prayer beads. they are all just meaningless objects unless you give in completely to a belief it possesses power to connect you to a supernatural entity. that's when your mind goes on a little trip.

Wasn't there an experiment where a bunch of people used a Ouija board blindfolded? If the ghost can see, blindfolding the living human being shouldn't matter, as long as their hands could work a planchette.

As I recall, it was a complete and total bust.

That said, I avoid them because a Catholic upbringing instructed me to do so, even though intellectually they're probably harmless. It's hard to break ingrained childhood edicts.

I am curious, though, about this audio Ghost Box thing that Aunt Blabby mentioned. Where did he get such a thing? Did he believe in this stuff prior to using the Ghost Box, or did it make him some kind of believer?

In almost all cultures there is a common belief you can summon entities. Labels vary but outcomes are similar. And some individuals are more sensitive to this phenomena > others

A Ouija board isn't actually magic, but maybe it can act as some type of "tuning fork" for people who believe strongly enough and in doing so invite/summon something.

I'm reminded of a strange crossover between ancient Celtic vampires (inspiration for Bram Stoker), Halloween, Mexican Day of the dead, shamans summoning spirits and Native American Skinwalkers. Commonality is the idea you can summon an entity.

Bram Stoker drew on old pre-christian Celtic beliefs and interestingly his vampires also needed to be invited by the owner of a home into the house. Likewise all shamans must first summon or invite an entity using runes, bones, music, ritual smoke or potions and universally (Africa, south America or Asia) the entity is invited enter the body of the shaman.

A séance in Victorian England tries to replicate the same thing with chanting and Ouija boards.
