We're actually on the high end here with it being 17/18 on average. Most of Europe is actually around 15 with a +/-1 variable for their age of consent. The aforementioned Netherlands' age of consent is 16.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_Europe

Spain's age of consent is 13. Kinda wonder if maybe we're the weird ones here.

This is because the US still considers teenagers to be children. They aren't. They are right in the middle of adulthood and childhood, and that's generally when mammals start procreating.

Yup.

It should also be noted that, no matter what the law says, teenagers WILL start sexually experimenting. No one's gonna stop it, it's basic human nature.

I'm pretty sure that, by the age of 15, most teenagers have had some sort of sexual experience, even if they haven't lost their virginity yet.

I believe the average age for first sexual experience in Europe (note, this doesn't necessarily mean penetrative sex) is 14.

that would require overtly admitting a prejudice against homosexuals. anti-homosexual bigots try really hard not to do that, sometimes. it's almost as if they realize that it makes them look like anti-homosexual bigots.

Heaven forbid that bigots should come right out and announce their bigotry!

Although whether disguised bigotry is a laughing matter is up for debate.

That would be interesting, but I'm not straight.

So your saying it's wrong for me, someone who is bisexual, to object to the idea that we are slaves to our sexuality?

Because that is what we as Christians try to impart, and that I find it more offensive when I hear people who assume that just because I feel something, that I must automatically follow it. And that if I have gay/bisexual/straight children, that they are more then their sexuality.

But the good media only says to us 'You are such and such, and by that your life is defined.'

oh that media. always saying things about stuff.

i'm finding it difficult to see where i misjudged you. you claim to be bisexual, which is to say that you experience both heterosexual and homosexual desires, but you only consider heterosexual relationships to be worthy of "marriage" because of your christianity.... i'm not all that surprised. religion is rather self-destructive. that's one of the reasons we decided to keep it out of our laws...

...which is why we keep asking for a good reason to refuse homosexuals the right to marriage that isn't based on your religion.

and while i'm glad that you seem to be able to reconcile your stated, ambiguous, feelings with your stated beliefs, a lot of people don't have the luxury of choosing their sexuality. why would you expect people who identify themselves as homosexuals to live as heterosexuals any more than you would expect heterosexuals to live as homosexuals?

ask a few self-proclaimed heterosexual men if they think they'd enjoy some hot man-on-man action. if they give typical answers of "no thanks" (or less polite versions of "no thanks"), would you assume they were lying? if not, why would you assume such of homosexuals?

or are they all just being "slaves to our sexuality?"

so i'll rephrase my condemnation:

you don't think homosexual behavior is a valid expression of humanity. it is, as you've been indoctrinated to believe unworthy of the same respect heterosexual behavior is due. therefore, your own desires are crimes for which you must be forgiven.

you should write an article about your experiences and conclusions. i'm sure conservapedia would love to publish it.

Sounds about right.

Any idea what it is in the US?

The problem of teen pregnancy might be helped somewhat if people didn't have such a hang up with self gratification as an alternative. I remember how Bill Clinton's first Surgeon General, Joycelin Elders, was driven from office by conservatives because she had advocated the promotion of masturbation in schools.
No, I'm not so naive as to think that encouraging kids to rub one out will entirely turn the problem around. But it should help somewhat.

That's actually what they do in Spain.

IMO, the best way to deal with it is to stop acting like teenagers having sex is some sort of horrible thing that needs to be stopped. The media are doing that just to scare people, it's called sensationalist reporting.

All they need to do is just promote safe sex. Because, as I noted already, there ain't no way they're gonna stop it happening. The best they can do is make sure it's safe when it does happen.

However, that said, I read somewhere that the number of teenagers using condoms is increasing to level that they're actually more likely to put a sock on their cock ( ) than adults are.

There should be a good balance between proper sexual education and the promotion of abstinence.

The fact is, there are many very good reasons for teens to not have sex. The problem I see most with sex ed is that teens aren't taught exactly WHY they should wait. They're either told "Do it and get sick and DIE" or "God won't love you anymore". There is a middle ground.

oh no. that's not up for debate. bigotry, disguised or not, is a laughing matter.

it's also a crying shame.

but what is humor if not a safety valve? you hear something ridiculous and an alarm goes off in your brain that sends your body into audible convulsions and an emergency injection of chemical happiness.

there's a reason modern american satire is so amazingly awesome. the material writes itself.

extremely vocal, anti-homosexual, bigots with national/international recognition caught "getting gay" in airport restrooms and taking rentboys on vacation are news stories that require no additional writing efforts to turn them into top-notch comedy. ffs, antoine dodson is famous because of the interview he gave about someone breaking into his home and trying to rape his sister. then some nerds autotuned it and it's played as music at parties and at theme parks (just heard it at the annual "hanging" ((another strangely laughing matter))at knott's) and as ringtones! and this is an interview about a man breaking into someone's home and trying to commit rape!! ! and, despite dodson's claim that "we gon' find you," this man has not been caught. this is what we currently consider "a laughing matter."

What are these reasons, then? Other than adults tell you not to do it and your parents will get mad if they find out?

BTW, while 16 year olds are still considered children in most US states, we're almost adults where I live. Not only can we legally have sex, but we can live on our own, have a family, and get married too.

And, as mentioned by skafather84, the average age of consent in Europe is 15.

Clearly, teenagers are trusted a lot more by our legal system, eh?

when god is involved, there can be no middle ground.

the solution is obvious but too many consider it onerous: putting books of fiction in the fiction section and treating them accordingly.

but the horribly substandard sex education in american schools causing more/less sex isn't why it gets brought up when discussing same-sex marriage. sex ed comes up because anti-homosexual bigots don't want their children being told that homosexuality exists as anything but a deviant and sinful choice. it just brings it back to the point that they're not just against same-sex marriage. they're against homosexuality.

One very good reason for teens to not have sex is the fact that they aren't legally an adult in the US until the age of 18. They also aren't out of mandatory school until 18.

I realize that these are legal issues and some don't feel they are good enough. However, studies show that teen parents have a rather low rate of graduation and even lower for higher education. This severely limits their options as adults.

I know teen parents can overcome these obstacles, but it's extremely difficult. Especially so because many high schools just refuse to accommodate teen mothers so that they can at least graduate.

Sounds like that can be fixed by simply having safe sex.

I meant a middle ground between comprehensive sex ed where they hand out condoms and birth control and the religious arguments against sex before marriage.

Eh... not really. It can (and has been) reduced but birth control fails all the time.

Yes, it's not 100% effective, but if you take the pill as well you'll find the chances of you having a kid pretty much drop to 0.1%.

Assuming the pill is being used correctly. I don't remember exactly what study it was, but it was found that some 40 percent of women (teens included) do not actually take the pill properly. This reduces the effectiveness of it quite a bit.

Besides, not all women CAN take birth control. I sure can't. Nor can my sister or my mother. I would bet money on my daughter being the same way.
