Can someone maybe explain the concept of metaphor to ArrantPariah - but, like, in another thread or something - seeing as this one is about gun control.

Fair enough - but if the disagreement extends to that fundamental a level, then we're pretty much at an impasse - and you're at odds with the majority in America.
I don't think that's true - but in all the gun control threads on the site, the subject rarely comes up. Personally, I think our gun control system as defined in legislation works (for the most part - there are a lot of gun control laws that are either written with extreme ambiguity and/or inconsistency - especially at the state level) - the failure comes from an incomplete or inefficient implementation of those laws. I believe a lot of good could be done simply by reforming the NICS background check system and providing them the funding they need to keep it running consistently and get all available data into the system.
I generally don't. Self-defense and 'because its cool' attitudes are not particularly useful in my view. I can see the arguments in favour of a responsible citizen taking on their own responsibility but even that I cannot reconcile with a flippant 'guns are art' or 'the new picatinny rail is sexy' view of firearms. If carrying a weapon is your duty to society and the social contract, because you know kings of England and all that, it is surely a serious duty and not something to be taken lightly and certainly not for immature views of weapons.
I find it hard to look at something like this and not appreciate the artistry that went into creating it:

That doesn't devalue, at all, the very serious and very real reasons people have for owning firearms - but I also think there are very important cultural and historical reasons to keep firearms around as well.
I'm not saying they can't - I'm merely saying I haven't seen any proposal that does.
I've spent quite a bit of time in Manhattan, as well as all the other cities I've mentioned (and I love NYC to death) - but I have to say that it doesn't "feel" safe to me in the way a lot of other US cities do (especially Seattle). Not being able to carry in DC doesn't bother me nearly as much as it does in NYC.
A fair point - a more accurate comparison would be a graph of various crime statistics before and after gun control measures were enacted - but I've had something of a long day and don't really feel like googling. Perhaps Dox has such an infographic buried on his hard drive somewhere.

Many of the pro gun chaps I met in Virigina were nice middle-aged chaps who had a handgun and a hunting rifle and little chance of harming anyone. There are however people who piggyback on that and then decide that their trips to the firing range must make them look like a counterstrike player. A person who wants to walk around with their weapon and look all warie is not a responsible citizen and their citizens have every right to be annoyed with them. If you are a pro gun chap, then you should make yourself accountable, register your weapon and have its ballistics on record, don't go buying after market gear to sex it up and understand that in the rest of the civilised world, a gas operated weapon is not considered a hunting rifle (so the assault weapons distinction is meaningless), unless you are hunting the Taliban. Background checks and registrations, these things should be no briainers (and polling shows that they mostly are), as should restrictions on taking weapons across state lines. Further, lets be perfectly honest, gun control in a big city is totally different from the countryside. Urban centres should have restrictions on handguns.
Where I take issue with the anti-gun chaps (my own side), is over the constant criticism of the NRA for capitalising on mass shootings to make political points. It baffles me how someone can watch something like Bowling for Columbine, see his massive criticism of Heston for speaking and then fail to see the hypocrisy in the name of the movie. Every time there is a mass shooting, the pro-gun control chaps go on another push for greater controls (and good on them) but lets be honest about what exactly is going on there.
Woohoo Virginia!
Personally, I am not a fan of most AR platforms ( too lightweight for accurate offhand shooting). However, I own three non registered bolt actions. What is the point of registering them? I can tell you all their serial numbers from memory and keep notes on just about everything else. For that matter why should Americans care what the rest of the "civilized word"says. It's not like they are supreme beings that are infallible.

I am just going to repeat my previous statement. Automatic refers to the method of how the weapon cycles to the next round, not the rate of fire on trigger pull. Fully automatic and semi-automatic are definitions that relate to what happens on a sustained trigger pull. During my military service the definitions were strictly enforced and even a 1911 was classified as an automatic. Although the pistol we used was the Browning BAP (Automatic Pistol). In the popular perhaps even the legal terminology you might be correct but as of my weapons manuals, the military (Australian) designation of automatic refers to the system of reload.
Yes, and I refer to my semi-auto handguns as automatics as well but full auto capable firearms and semi-auto only ones are still two different animals by that virtue alone. We have idiots in this country (and others) that think AR-15's, Mini-14's, civilian version of AK-47's or AK-74's, or any rifle or carbine that takes a high capacity magazine are machineguns.
Of course not, you did not read the thread, we were discussing drum magazines...
Not that many countries armies use drum mags except for the ones that use com-block weapons like the RPK. Maybe a few others but not many widely use them. Personally, I have no use for a drum mag on my AR because they are too bulky and make the weapon feel on the unwieldy side for what it is. Other reasons, too. I use 30 rounders and can swap them out pretty godd@mn quick. Anyone can with a little practice. On the other hand, You can rest assured I would fight banning drum mags because of the simple-mindedness and invasiveness such a ban represents and the fact that it would be one more stepping stone to disarmament. Reeally, that's my position on the subject and it won't soften with time.

To each his own but to me this is absolutely hideous!
It looks like something a Chicago pimp would carry and then hold it sideways, gansta style, to fire it. The SP-89 is not even a serous persons weapon, but a mall ninja's street legal MP-5k.
They are a self-inflicted insult to the Heckler & Koch family of weapons.

Nothing with scroll-work can be classified as mall ninja. And like it or no, it is definitely original.

Yeah, a mall ninja would have hung a bunch of tacticool accessories off of it and kept it flat black. IMHO, it kinda reminds me of some of the guns in the Borderlands games. It is kind of an odd choice for doing that kind of expensive cosmetic work, not quite like engraving a Sten, but in the same ballpark. We'd occasionally get those projects in when I was in school, like the guy that had us put a $300 mirror polish and rust blue on his Remington 870 duck gun...

Define attitude and who's is right. A rabbit hunter may have a totally different attitude about his guns than someone in to more tactical stuff and neither are wrong. Accountable means you are accountable for what you do, not your image. You cannot codify and effectively enforce laws governing image and attitude but you can when it comes to physically harmful action.
I'm a NRA certified Range Safety Officer (RSO) so I see what all shows up our shooting ranges when I have "the duty". The kooks you are talking about are by far the exception rather than the norm. I cannot boot them off of the premises simply for what they look like and personally, I don't wring my hands over them being there shooting as long as they follow the rules.
Register? There is no registry in which to register one or have its ballistics on record in most states. Why would a responsible gun owner need to, anyway? Show me where registering guns has had a measurable effect on crime. I don’t care what you want or feel we should have but just tell me what the value of it has been.
Why not? Anything I’ve installed on my M4 is of top drawer quality and has a purpose. A purpose you wouldn't understand but that’s beside the point. I won’t even bother to explain.
1. I never have and never will take into consideration what the “civilized world” thinks about any gun I buy or what I do with it.
2. There are gas operated rifles made specifically for hunting. This is not about hunting rifles, anyway.
Back to that. What good have these hindrances done in the past besides make the handwringers feel good?
Right.
In the places you most need a means of protection it should be denied.
Look at Chicago, as one example, and tell me how well your plan has worked.
The anti-gunners tastelessly exploit shootings like Sandy Hook as tools to further their agenda. On the pro-gun side of the house we, know that the only way to stop an active shooter is to shoot them.
All these measure you think us dumb Americans should adopt to make you feel good way over there in the land down under aint gonna happen. The political climate is now pro-gun, no matter what any polls indicate. Being an American gun nut I would know first hand. In 2009 when Obama took office there was concern that there would be gun control bills passed into law and that brought mass hording that went on for over a year. A whole new crop of gun owners sprouted that would not have owned a gun in the past. Not just hunting rifles but AR-15’s, AK’s, Glocks, magazines by the dozen, ammo by the 500 and 1000 round case, etc…. All that scary stuff.
Again in late 2012 with Sandy Hook we had another hording and it is still, in effect, going for some common calibers of ammo. This is as of TODAY when I went looking. All these new gun owners (voters) are now, you guessed it, pro-gun. The old hats in the pro-gun camp are even more vehemently pro-gun.

It is...I think that's why I like it. Someone also color case hardened an AR10 and added gold inlay and mahogany hardware which I thought was really cool as well.
EDIT: picture

Gun crime is at a 20 year low, but the media wants you to think it's every day. If you look at the gun murders in America, if you remove the gang ridden cesspools like Chicago, we have a very low murder rate.
There are big problems.
Poverty: It brings gangs, it brings thefts.
A revolving door criminal justice system: 70% of criminals in the Baltimore criminal justice system have priors, yet they keep getting out. We either need better ways to keep them from reoffending or to stop letting them out.
A police system that can't protect people. People don't see s**t in gang neighborhoods because the police can't protect them from the gangs and will go out of their way to keep them from acquiring their own protection. If I lived in DC an saw a crime, and wanted a gun in case the gang bangers came after me, it would take months of paperwork and hundreds of dollars, just for the licenses.
A lack of emphasis on mental health care, and a huge stigma if you get care.
Now want a fun thing? Look at England for example, look at the gun crime rate, and then look at the part 1 violent crime rate (Part 1 includes murder, rape, robbery, and assault).
Gun Control people never want to discuss this ugly fact, that when you take law abiding citizens guns away, they become nothing but targets for criminals. I see people every day as a firefighter who wouldn't last 20 seconds if a thug broke into their home, but gun control people have no problem disarming them and making them victims.
