I believe in self reliance,as much as possible for me.And I do get a check,but take it away and I can still exist.I won't have electricity or a phone.But I have water and wood.All I have to do is pay my land taxes,and I can pick up enough black walnuts or sell roots to do that.How free are you Magneto?By the way,I'm liberal.

How did you glean that I have feelings of inadequacy regarding self reliance out of my posts? As I recall, most of my posts have been regarding civil rights legislation. More recently, I took a swipe at Bush's lackluster presidency, and the idiot racism of birtherism. I fail to see where self reliance comes into question. I'm beginning to think this self reliance thing is just a knee jerk jab by conservatives when they've run out of ammunition.

Anti Government? It is hard to favor one.

The concept seems needed, but the behavior is wanting.

I go with Ibn Khaldun, all governments are doomed to fail, and they fail in the same way.

No class of the people survive, all of them pack up what they have left and sneak away in the night.

I think the government should be in mortal fear of the populace at all times.

So a government should be weak, then--and politicians should generally be stripped of human abilities?

Take a look at how much wrong and half-assed people do everyday on their jobs.. People spend hours every workday on Facebook, take twice as many smoke breaks as they're allowed to, bosses leave at 2 PM because they feel like it, manual labourers spend more time chatting with their co-workers than actually working, people destroy stuff all the time at the work etc. These people fail even more at their job than George W. Bush or Barack Obama ever did at their jobs, and significantly more than Bill Clinton did... and just like politicans prove their worth by speeched and campaigns, they usually got their jobs by having great conversational skills during an interview rather than proving that they could do something useful. Most of these said workers would starve to death without a government.

I'm not for an authoritarian state, but a weak government is doomed from the beginning. The last great president was Bill Clinton, but people should at least cut Obama and Bush some slack because they both served in tough economical times and had to take the blame for all the failings of the congress. If the president did as bad of a job as John and Jane Doe, the economy would be damaged beyond repair in a matter of months.

The last great president was Thomas Jefferson. It has been downhill since 1803

Thomas Jefferson was an avid horticulturist.

Jefferson was avid about many things. It has also been speculated that he was an aspie. If you ever find yourself in the Charlottesville area a tour of Monticello is a must.

That I would go to,and Colonial Williamsburg.If you are ever in LR check out the Territorial
Restoration,it has the tavern/hotel that Crockett stayed at before he went to the Alamo,he bought his famous Bowie knife at Washington Ar,once a Confederate capital.They claimed the blade was forged from a meteorite and that the secret of how the blades were forged was carried to the grave.They are know here as an Arkansas toothpick.If someone wanted you to move on down the road they would pull put their Bowie knife and pick their teeth with it. It was a all purpose tool,like a small machete.

As a history buff, I would die to go to Monticello!
