It is the first time I have come across this, also.
Essentially, nothing really new to me concept wise, but it does tie things together nicely.

there are lots more of such folks than many people realize. interesting book about 'em called "the sociopath next door."

Democratic World Problems, like a tendency for partizanship, can be played very effectively by autocrats.
Let's say that to continue our partizan fights, right now we need to defend the world where they are possible
That's why e.g. our Catholic bishops and LGBT activists are united at the moment. They can go back to hating each other only if the world where they can both exist is preserved.

One of the main differences between Trump and Putin is that Putin has the self-restraint to work slowly towards long-term goals whereas Trump seems much more impulsive and far less capable of avoiding unforced errors due to being overtaken by impulses.

If Putin had Trumpian levels of self-control he'd just be some dead minor criminal and former KGB officer from 1990s era Russia. If Trump had Putin's level of self-control and ability to delay gratification there'd be no telling what he might have been capable of.
