Feminism is all about supporting women. You're being obtuse by pretending not to know that.

erm, no. we have explained to you again and again that it involves equality for BOTH men and women. i think that perhaps you are not listening.

Oh I'm listening, and what I'm hearing is nothing but how great yet held back women are. If feminism is about everyone, its relevance ceases, as it defers to simply Equal Rights or the Golden Rule.
There is nothing for which people need feminism itself. And if it's not about women, then the name is doing it the great disservice of falsely communicating what it is.
They need to pull a "Global Warming"-to-"Climate Change" broadening of title, if it includes everyone equally.

But again, any civilized human being knows everyone should be treated the same. That's Jesus' doctrine, so the concept has been around for literally two thousand years, so there never was a need within the past two thousands to pretend there's suddenly this bright new idea about everyone treating everyone as they would like to be treated. Feminism simply is not needed in any society that has been heavily exposed to Jesus' teachings, or even any other philosophy promoting equanimity. I mean, you act as if feminists just showed up one day and invented the concept of basic human fairness. It is really laughable.

I hate when people say this. The IPCC is more than 20 years old and includes the word "Climate Change".

you hold authority over your wife, and therefore you are not demonstrating this principle in your own day to day life.

Oh, that is rich. Given how often certain Christians use the Bible to justify limited roles for women and other prohibitions, or to claim that the man MUST be the head of the home, it is far from obvious to everyone who claims to read the Bible that the Bible teaches fair and equitable treatment. I happen to think it does, but it seems to be pretty easy for all sorts of people to contort it into saying otherwise.

You are forgetting about human nature, which naturally sees everything through distorted glasses. If men feel threatened by women they will not treat them fairly, and they will count on getting away with it. Sure, women are capable of doing the same, but since men tend to hold more of the power in our society, it is still women who are more likely to get the short end of the stick in the bias game. I've been around the block a few times and I've SEEN it.

And ... I get the distinct impression that you like to argue simply for the sake of arguing. To me, it sounds like you arguing against yourself at times. Interesting.

She makes as little sense here as she usually does. However, she seemed mostly rational in her last two posts in my thread in the Love & Dating sub-forum. Here, though, she's speaking from her emotions, and is therefore all over the map as usual. :?

For instance, other peoples' misinterpretation of the Bible -- who cares? What does that have to do with anything? I'm not making the misinterpretations she mentions, and I've already said the Bible says to treat women with great love and with respect. It ALSO says the man is to be the head of the home! I didn't say this, GOD DID.

Same thing.

2 Tim 3:17
Quote:
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."

Christian orthodoxy holds that, like all Bible writers, Paul's commands and revelations come from God, except where he indicates he is speaking on his own.

Ehhhh, don't want to derail this thread.

And you are speaking from your bias, what you assume about me rather than what is fact about me, and what is available about me on these boards. I am not an emotional poster, for the most part, although I do tend to have a more NT logic. Don't mistake the NT quality of my logic for hormonal emotion; arguing is part of what I get PAID to do, and in real life I never lose.

As for why we care about other people's misinterpretaions, you seem to forget what thread you are in. Isn't the conversation about why feminists feel they need legal recognition for the rights and status of women? So how could the way things actually are NOT be relevent?

I believe the Bible is the divinely-inspired Word of God.

Some people here have a problem with Paul.
Here's the Apostle Peter on the Christian marriage dynamic:

Quote:
Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

(1 Peter 3:7)

He perfectly sums up what I've been saying all along: That women are different than men, "weaker" in his words, but that they are still to be respected and loved.

Now I could take that as physically weaker (which is generally true) and nothing more. other than physically strength they are equal

^ I don't know Biblical Greek, so I won't argue about the word 'weaker'. I will say that perhaps he meant physically weaker, which on average is true. Physical strength is not as relevant to life in modern society as it was back then.

Also, if you keep saying that men and women are different, could you please illustrate the relevance of such a common-sense assertion? No straw feminists who think men and women are exactly the same, please. As far as I can see, people being different does not affect their rights and self-determination.

Paul was writing for his time and, seriously, when you pull single phrases out from the Bible you can find support for about anything; that is part of why I do not believe the Bible was written to be taken literally, but more as a living breathing book that can speak to each of us uniquely depending on our individual needs and God's unique plan for us.

But in a nation where we officially have separation of church and state, the Bible really isn't relevent to what should be happening in the eyes of our laws, especially since it can be read so many different ways, and didn't I already make that point?

You may believe whatever you want in your personal life, but in the workplace and in our laws we need to balance the needs of all and keep an equal playing field. Without that, many men will use your passage to keep talented individuals who happen to be women from doing jobs that their bias tells them only men can do. As a society, we should always want the best talent in all jobs.
