If they can't get guns, they'll use other tools to commit crimes.
Riiiiiight! That's the point! Len them use pepper spray and we all SURVIVE with no physical harm done.

I don't think you understand the mechanics of crime or weapons terribly well. Pepper spray is somewhat effective in the defensive role, but just about useless offensively as it's imprecise and indiscriminate; you can't pepper spray someone into submission and remain in close proximity to them, as is required for most violent crimes, without being effected by the gas yourself. Muggers and rapists would more likely resort to their more traditional, and deadly, tools of knives and clubs if guns were to be made truly unavailable and not just to the non-criminal public. You might make a case for stun-guns, but the same countries that ban guns tend to ban them too, and they're certainly more expensive and difficult to acquire than knives and clubs, with no gain in effectiveness save non-lethality, which doesn't tend to top the criminal list of desired weapon attributes.

I am thankful I don't live in a place where packing is needed to feel safe. The only people I have met around here who regularly carry are criminals worried about getting shot by other criminals, which is still a rare occurrence here, and thus their guns are mostly for intimidation. A society that lives in constant fear is not a society I want to be a part of

Well, change pepper spay with "jet" or "foam", better? And I do not think police use it defensively. They "attack" you with it and then handcuff you lying on the ground aka make anything they want with you. Not so? Sure it is unusual to rob bank with spray can, but not impossible if you can do it with bouquet of flowers :wink:

Remind me again, why are you so certain that criminals would bypass proven weapons like knives and bludgeons in favor of finicky and unreliable pepper spray? Do most muggers and rapists put a whole lot of value on the well-being of their victims?

Also, the police have masks and access to pepper spray neutralizer, and if you notice they tend to step back after using it in a one on one situation.

A point of note:

My old sensai, all 5'2" and 100 pounds of her, could have cleared out a theater with ease with her sword if no one had a firearm (I'd die just the same as everyone else, and I was taught by her). You couldn't actually get close to her to attempt to disarm her (there goes your hands, arms, head, and life if you go within sword distance), so the only thing you could do is run; bad luck if she so happened to block the exit (ten people run at her? That's ten people with fatal wounds).

It's not the weapon.
