Yup. A standing paid military is

Eh, America doesn't need an Empire, but if we have to obtain one to secure our safety and that of our allies, then so be it.

Yep. Because before we started with the extra-territorial
ambitions, this country was SO in danger of being
attacked?

Indeed, even when we first started expanding our
empire, we had quite a bit of good will, throughout
the world.

f*****g with other country's internal policies doesn't
really win one a lot of support though. Kinda what
caused the Brits to get their empire too.

True, but allowing genocide leaves a bad aftertaste in ones mouth. Kinda similar to sniffing ammonia.

Perhaps. I can't think of a war that
we entered to stop genocide though.

As I said, older.

Anyhow, I'm presuming that you
asked that with some sort of war
in mind? This country is less than 300
years old, so I'm surely qualified to
remember that far back.

No it was a rephrasing of "were you born yesterday?"

Right. Stop the rhetoric and try your example.

I can assure you, unless it happened within the
last few months, we've not entered a war in order
to stop a genocide.

Nah, volunteer army fights freely. The soldiers I've met are for the wars and are sick of the liberal media attacking them.
I think conscription should be a very last resort and that a referendum should be held first. If public support isn't enough, they would have to rely on volunteers.

If people are forced to do things, they are likely to be resentful and this isn't conducive to working well together.

See, the problem in the US is that the public
is able to support (well less and less) a war
effort, without risking themselves. There
are a goodly number of foreigners in the US
military, as it expedites their citizenship process.

Much of the rest of the military is made up of the
very poor, who get a pretty decent deal, AS LONG
AS THERE IS NO WAR. A lot of the recruiting tactics
in the HS's verge on harassment, as well.

If there was a draft, John Q. Public would be
seeing that his son (or daughter, one would hope)
would be at risk of having to die for his belief that
this was a reasonable use of force. Maybe Mr. Public
would see things a little differently if John Jr. was
at risk, instead of Carlos Hernandez. Maybe our
politicians wouldn't be quite so willing to make
military adventures.

Screw the draft. I value my own skin too much, and I respect those soldiers who go out and fight, especially if they realise the risk. I just don't respect pollies who send them out to fight wars we shouldn't get involved with.

Unfortunately, most people feel JUST
that way. It's not worth my skin, but
it's IMPORTANT.

Freedom requires sacrifice.

And heres me under the impression that dragging fights from one thread to another was frowned upon.

Make your minds up people, its either wrong, or a legitimate tactic.

Remember.. its an ASPIE site.. we ALL think we're right one way or another. Sometimes we are, sometimes we aint. Its morbidly amusing that in a thread started in the spirit of awarding " those who defend views which are not their own, treat people who have different views with respect, and take a stand against Trolls." that theres pages of posts slamming someone for having a different opinion..

Oh, and just to tidy up a loose end.. TCO never nominated himself for a damn thing, nor was he nominated at all.

Check your facts before you wiggle your fingers, that or dont make s**t up just for abusive comedy effect eh?
