what is the use of "making the best" of anything that falls into the jaws of inevitable annihilation?
temporary states of notions of secure permanence are always terminal.

i am just a witness to a slew of events that sweep in the stream of time past my senses.
i can relax on the shore and watch, or i can hop in and try to swim to nowhere through the insurmountable rapids of inevitability.

Just do what you feel like with your life, and help others to have a great life too. :D

When we die there is nothing to take. The notion of Soul is total balderdash. And to which god do you expect to take your non-existent Soul? There are several gods, none of them particularly useful.

I have to agree with that, hell is more depressing and scarier than nothingness, I think that people, generally, are unable to picture in their minds how their 'self' can vanish forever, and that may seem scary.

Speak for yourself, I'll take everything with me when I'm gone.

It depends on what you define as Soul, there seem to be different ways as what to refer as 'soul'.

Gods are not useful, I believe the issue is wether you are useful to them.

What makes you think you're going to die? Because other people around you have died? Have you died yet? Wait a few seconds... now have you died? No?, not yet? What if other people/things only died in your world/universe? In their universe they are still alive and wondering why you had to die. That's what all the multiple universes are for in string theory, so that everyone can have their own universe to exist in. There is a universe for every living thing that has ever been. Every time a living thing is "born" a new universe is created for them. These universes overlap and interact but are not the same. When someone or something dies in your universe it still exists in it's universe and you will always exist in yours.

OK, so I was really bored at work and this just came out of my head. Actually I have NO clue. I think my idea is as good as anyone else's. At least in my universe it is. :)

Look up telomere. A normal cell is good for about fifty divisions. The last generation can no longer subdivide so when it is dead (which it will be) that is the end of that line of cells.

Basically it is a matter of thermodynamics.

Sure, the cell is dead in your universe, but maybe it's still living in its universe.

Believe it or not, a scientific theory is not a bunch of scientists getting drunk one evening, finding their 'research' clumsily written down on handkerchiefs the next morning. If you think your idea is as good as anyone else's, you are quite wrong.

Who said anything about a theory? Actually my idea IS as good as any one else's concerning the original topic about what happens after you die. I'd like to see you PROVE otherwise with scientific theory. HAH. :hail:

*raises eyebrow* Well, if you really think a hypothesis (might be too generous to call it a hypothesis) carries as much weight as a theory on face value...

That death is only that the biological functions of the body, which includes the brain and all our thought processes, permanently ceases to function properly seems most consistent with what we know of the universe, and is therefore more likely to be true.

When you make a claim, it is up to you to support it, not anyone else.

OK, OK don't get your panties in bunch over this. I was just throwing something out there to think about, just for fun. The FACT is that NO ONE will EVER know what happens after you or I die so you and I can think what ever we like. This is one where whatever works for a person is best. Really doesn't matter what is more likely to be true.

You can't claim that it's just as good as any other idea. That's what I get upset about, and that's usually how superstitions spread.

Er yeah, because the notion of 'afterlife' is by definition not able to be tested in any way.

Which is a gentle way of justifying believing in unfounded assertions.

The existance of an afterlife is either true or false, no matter 'what works best for a person'. If you prefer to surrender to ignorance, when we have no argument.

And your assertions that there is nothing after death are founded how? I suppose you talked to a guy once who died and he told you, "yep, there's nothing, I'm all gone now".

Please learn how to quote.

You have done absolutely nothing to support your hypothesis besides making an assertion. Work on that for a few years, and you might have a point.

Maybe after 2274 posts (11 per day) I will be able to quote correctly. Of course I have a real life so it may take me a little longer.

It's not a hypothesis, just a "what if". Nor am I trying to make point. You're taking it too seriously.

You can not prove that I don't have an ostrich in my bathroom. I feed him 17 year old Swedish boys for dinner.

This was fun. We will have to do it again sometime.

From my perspective, you'll die and with your attitude, you'll probably die very let down.

Heh heh... Try to make philosophy fun and look what happens!

Reality is subjective, objective reality we can only imagine, which makes it thus subjective.

As for why I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, reality is subjective. I cannot conceive of not existing in a pure sense, or visualize such a universe, because I am then the observer, the imaginer, the conceiver.

Should I cease, reality as I know it ceases, should I continue and something of me survive the transformation of death, then I didn't cease, and reality as I know it continues on.

I won't die disappointed unless I happen to be disappointed by something other than death at the time. Death is no more disappointing than life. They are both rather expected to happen no matter how much I procrastinate.

It seems to be misunderstood that what 83CJ7 is proposing is not an afterlife but is a concept that we are beings existing in a very large number of universes simultaneously and if we cease to exist in this particular universe it does not mean we do not continue to exist in the others. There is no way to disprove this that I know and no way to prove it. Universes in close proximity are probably almost impossible to tell apart so a consciousness moving to a universe close by probably would not even be aware it was in a different universe. It is a lot more realistic proposal than the standard religious nonsense of souls and heavens, etc. but just as unprovable.
