What makes you think rationality is better than irrationality?

Bear mind that if you answer this question with any degree of rationality, you will be using a circular argument because you can't use rationality to justify the use of rationality.

Boring.

Irrationality is what turns sexual attraction into lust. Ambition into greed, hunger into glutony. Not being rational is what leads people into wrath or into thinking that being proud is a bad thing... It is also what makes us fall prey of religious stupidity and conspiracy theories. It is the one and only deadly sin, it can not only kill you, it can make you kill others just out of your mere existence of spreading stupidity everywhere. It is also what lead you to make that lame post.

Having the ability and use of reason does not preclude one from committing lust, does it?

Lust is what ensures the survival of our species since we are mortal and the only way that humanity can continue to exist is to reproduce(sexually). The notion that lust is a sin is just plain St00pid.....But then again so is the bible. :D

Ah, so it is possible to rationalize lust. You do realize that if survival of the species is what matters, then rape and cannibalism can also be justified likewise?

Sort of along the sex life of the praying mantis?

Could use that as an example. Similar to justifying homosexuality because it occurs in nature as well:

Quote:
One use of modus tollens is the reductio ad absurdum argument, i.e. showing that a premise is false by demonstrating that it implies an absurd conclusion.

An example is the effort by Bishop John Shelby Spong to show that homosexual acts are OK because some animals practise them. As it stands, the argument is invalid. To make it valid, another premise is needed that states: whatever animals do is OK.

1) Animals practise homosexual acts;
2) Whatever animals practise is OK;
∴ Homosexual acts are OK.

To prove the argument to be sound, that premise must be proved to be true. Conversely, to prove the argument to be unsound, the premise must be shown to be false. This can be done by showing that it leads to a ridiculous conclusion:

1) Animals practise rape and cannibalism;
2) What animals do is OK;
∴ Rape and cannibalism are OK.

Now if one does not accept the conclusion, if one is logical one must reject one or more of the premises. As (1) is empirically true, (2) must be the false premise. So Spong’s argument contains a false premise and is thus unsound.

Lust by definition is sexual desire. If there were no lust, then most people wouldnt put much effort into getting sex. Sex is the ONLY biological means we have of procreating! No sex means no children, no children means no future for the human race after those who are already born grow old and die. I dont see any evidence that cannibalism is necessary for the survival of our species as a whole. Rape is very much a form of aggression and has little to due with lust despite being a sexual act.

Thank you for proving that lust is able to be rationalized. Wouldn't greed by equally justifiable according to the same pattern of thought?

No... especially not Biblically, where instructed to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."

However, in public schools and North Korea, I could certainly see how thinking is considered a sin there.

Greed is a bad sin. It is the most likely to result in behaviors like stealing and lying. When you take more than you need, you hurt others. The whole concept of life is to give and take, not just take. Greed is a root cause for things like envy and gluttony. Greed stems from the mistrust of the abundance of life.

Pride is the most dangerous and possibly the worst. It is like holding fire and oil. It is powerful but can quickly get out of control if not used properly. It has resulted in facism and extreme nationalism. From Nazi Germany to the American confederate army, pride begins to form into a destructive, inhuman concept. Unlike greed, pride is hard to estinguish once it starts.

Greed is what I pick, absolutly. Where do I even start with the #% it brings? One sin can be part of another, but greed belongs in all the other six in it's own uncool way. I see it just about everywhere I go. :x

Maybe it's 'don't care-ness'. Or a tendency to destroy/self-destruct.

Pride is at the core of all others. Without pride, the others do not exist.

I find it interesting that the subject was taken rather differently than intended or asked... my question was which is the greatest of the seven sins, that if you could only have one of these vices in your life which one would you keep? Yet the response was that of which was the more terrible, which had a more devastating effect on humanity. Interesting - please continue!

Ah. I read the topic question when I answered... oops.

As for which one to keep: gluttony, as it is not actually a sin, though it is unwise and unhealthy in the long term.

Such is life.. I tried to make that distinct with the 'Greatest' inflection, but did not make it clear. I just find the entire transition interesting, and appreciate the responses on both counts.
