Plain and simply, is it acceptable to promote racism against any group of people in particular?

Only if they are white and christian.

Well, obviously it's not acceptable. But for some stupid reason, a black or pakistani person could say anything they want about whites but if it's the other way round everyone is outraged.

The 'stupid' reason is generally because they are part of a minority group or considered a minority group, and for people belonging to a minority group, they feel that certain things can affect their civil rights, in some way or another, based on how their treatment was in the past, unlike, denigrating whites, given that they are not considered a minority group, and it doesn't seem to pose any danger to white's civil rights in anglo countries and other western nations. It doesn't look that there is someone in charge above whites that are able undermine their rights.

Hey, you know it's nice to actually be able to freely speak on this issue. Yeah, freedom of speech win. WP's first, just about... (well, possibly not but usually threads talking about the topic of anything which isn't politically correct or otherwise taboo usually had gotten locked in a few femptoseconds.)

I don't think that anyone yet has presented a cogent argument to demonstrate to me that affirmative action programs constitute racism.

To my way of thinking, racist practices are grounded in a belief in the superiority of one class of people, over other classes. Affirmative action programs, however, are not grounded in such a belief. Rather, they are grounded in the belief that policies that will increase the participation rates of various minority populations in the economy will serve to improve the general standard of living of that community.

In other words, if there are more aboriginal people in professional and management occupations, there will be more economic activity in aboriginal communities. If there are more aboriginal people in colleges and universities, there will be more aboriginal people seeking employment in professional and management occupations.

Now, I think it is a valid debate to question the effectiveness of affirmative action programs. But to describe them as racists is, I think, too facile an argument to hold.

Treating anyone like sh*t for insufficient reason is not acceptable behavior. A civilized person will have good manners. The is no good reason for insulting others without necessity.

They may not be intended as racist, and they are not vested in the usual negative trappings of racism but they are still racist acts because they rely on a distinction based on race rather than ability.

Depends on your definition of racist. If it is 'discriminate on the grounds of race' then yes. It's racist.
And yes, for anyone who misses out because of it it is a very bad thing.

Though a 'favoured' person would not necessarily have any less ability. You obviously need to hire people who can do the job.
Often you are not going to get hired because the boss "doesn't think that you will fit in"

In the case of small companies many may feel that hiring a disabled person is a pain in the ass. You might need a ramp, a special toilet etc. Greatly increasing the chances that a disabled person will be unemployed. From the government's point of view if they hire a disabled person they pay out the same wages and get a person off benefits//welfare. A good deal for the Govt as an able bodied person stands a better chance of getting a job in the private sector.

The same thing applies to anyone who is long term unemployed. Once someone get's (and keeps) their first job it is much easier to move on and get another one elsewhere.

So, you are talking about more people in work and fewer on benefits\welfare.

It is not easy for just anyone to get a job just anywhere.

Just because the level of discrimination is not as strong as more infamous periods or more notorious areas does not make it any less discriminatory. Slapping a jew for being a jew is magnitudes of severity below herding him and his family into a gas chamber but it has its roots in the same hatred. Hiring a black worker over a white worker simply because he is black is still racism. Hiring a white worker over a black one simply because he is white would be abhorrent.

This isn't a game of "my life is harder than yours" or "you did it first" and thus racism in any direction should be reviled.

No, there is no racism against whites in the occidental world. None. Not in any level. If anything, there is still ton of racism against non-whites. Just like you said, even in small levels, it is still racism.

It may not be acceptable, but it may be except-able.

I think that your definition is too deterministic.

Affirmative action programs are discriminatory--but not all discrimination is racism.

Discrimination is simply the act of choice. We discriminate every day. More appropriately to this thread, government discriminates every day. But it is not all discrimination that is wrong, from a policy point of view. The US constitution, for example, discriminates in favour of those born on US soil, by conferring citizenship upon them. Is that discriminatory? Yes, because it treats people differently based upon an arbitrary characteristic, their place of birth. But it is discrimination that is grounded in an affirmative and reasonable policy position.

I am quite prepared to live with the notion that affirmative action programs are discriminatory, and to have a policy discussion around whether that form of discrimination is able to achieve its policy objectives, and whether it is reasonable in a free and democratic society.

I am not prepared to live with the notion that all discriminatory practice is ipso facto racist.

Don't be so silly. Of course there is. Various ethnic communities in my area are quietly (or sometimes loudly) hostile towards whites. An area of our town spent three days cordoned off by the Police because of anti-white attacks by an Iraqi "minority" targeting whites. (The cordon was, predictably enough, to prevent white retaliation.) The very existence of groups like the Black Panthers for years in the west are evidence of racism against whites. There are militant Hawaiians who hate whites for colonising them. I can list these things for hours or you can go look for yourself. Go have a look. Lots and lots of racism around the place, by all colours and creeds against lots of other colours and creeds. If anything the one thing that unites such groups is mutual hatred based on nothing but colour.

Right. Because 'cracker' is a compliment, almost as nice as the n-word. Because nobody ever accused white people in general of being oppressors and racists. Because no comedian makes jokes at the expense of white people, saying they are all racist, entitled, wealthy, bigoted jerks who can't dance. Because no black person has ever accused another black person of 'acting white'.

Because nobody would assume that a white police officer who arrested a black professor on his porch did it for racist reasons, certainly not before all the facts were in. And when it got out that someone had called the police because they had seen this black professor trying to break into his own home, certainly nobody would assume that it was a racist white person who did it because the professor was black. And if the white police officer was backed up by a black police officer who also responded to the scene, certainly nobody would call that black police officer an 'Uncle Tom', since, after all, 'Uncle Tom' just means your father's brother, whose name is Thomas.

Racism is just wrong, an old, outdated institution that
is unfair when it is used against anyone.
