I would have approved expanding medicare and medicaid coverage, but not Obamacare. It drastically raises the national debt and it has so much bureaucracy that it cuts into the funding available for services and prescriptions. They could have then made incentives for businesses to pay for their own healthcare.

Democratic Underground, the democrats answer to FReepers. It's a pretty funny forum to read especially on election nights since most of the posters are on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Do you have a source, or are you pulling things out of your ass?

The Congressional Budget Office disagrees with you.

But only if Republicans get out and vote, both now and especially in 2012.

AMERICANS: “Listen to me: DO. NOT. PASS. THAT. BILL.”

DEMOCRATS: “You’re not the boss of me! We’re doing it anyway!”

AMERICANS: “Look what you did! Now the economy is way worse, we’re even deeper in debt, and we have a bunch of new laws we don’t want!”

DEMOCRATS: “You’re racist.”

AMERICANS: “Wha … How is that racist?”

DEMOCRATS: “Now you’re getting violent! Stop being violent and racist, you ignorant hillbillies! And remember to vote Democrat in November.”

So the Democrats sucked. But not just plain old, usual politician sucked, but epic levels of suck where it’s hard to find an analogue in human history that conveys the same level of suckitude. It was sheer incompetence plus arrogance — and those things do not complement each other well. We’re talking sucking that distorts time and space like a black hole.

It’s Godzilla-smashing-through-a-city level of suck — but a really patronizing Godzilla who says you’re just too stupid and hateful to see all the buildings he’s saved or created as he smashes everything apart. Or, to use Obama’s favorite analogy, you have a car stuck in ditch, so you call the mechanic, but the only tool he brings with him is a sledgehammer. And then he smashes your car to pieces and charges you $100,000 for his service. Finally, he calls you racist for complaining. Obama and the Democrats have been so awful, it’s hard for the human brain to even comprehend.

But the Democrats will counter that the Republicans also suck. And while this is true, it’s not really going to help them. As I pointed out before, both a dog incessantly barking and a zombie apocalypse are things that everyone would agree suck. Yet no one during a zombie apocalypse, while hiding out in a boarded up mall, would turn to the other survivors and say, “We don’t want to kill all the zombies; then we’d have to go back to being woken up at night by that annoying dog next door.” But this is the best argument the Democrats can come up with. “Remember how awful the Republicans and Bush were? You hated them. You don’t want to go back to that.” Yes, why would people want to go back to when 6% unemployment was considered high? ...

That is pretty good.

if you're a right-winger, there is no explaining it in a way that would resonate with you.

The fact that insurance companies can basically blacklist certain people from obtaining insurance coverage because they have a chronic illness is perfectly fair to you?

Insurance companies cannot do that in Massachusetts; if you maintain continuous coverage, they can't refuse you for preexisting conditions.

What if you can't maintain continuous coverage? In all the state's I'm familiar with if you get laid off for an extended time and lose access to affordable employer-provided health insurance you are SOL. Then when something major happens you pay out of pocket and deplete all your savings, property, etc... until you're flat broke. Then you might attempt to apply for Medicaid, but the process is so slow you might just die in the mean time. People who aren't sick and laid off really need to STFU with the obama-care bashing.

As a side note, part of the money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) passed by Obama in 2009 goes towards subsidizing 60% of health insurance premiums charged by COBRA. Originally it was only supposed to be effective for 9 months, but it's been extended to at least 18 months, or maybe more now, I'm not sure.

This has been a lifesaver for my family as my husband lost his job in 2009. In order to maintain health insurance, we would have had to come up with over 1000/month which would have been impossible given that unemployment only pays about 400/week (at most). Thankfully, with ARRA, the government picks up 60% of the tab so we were able to stay insured. Actually, our premiums were higher with my husband's former employer picking up 50%.

Without ARRA, we would have become uninsured and both my husband and my son have pre-existing conditions so that would have been very, very bad.

Well I might as well claim that if you're a left-winger, there's no way to explain why robbery is wrong in a way that would resonate with you.

taxation for the common good is NOT robbery. you just made my point about it not resonating with you- you see all taxation as robbery, so there is just no getting around that in talking with you.

What about taxation for the common good of politicians? The government is, in itself, the largest and most powerful business in this country. How does income does it make versus how much does it absorb?

That is another matter entirely. Whether or not taxes are distributed in a 'fair' manner, free of corruption and agendas, does not make taxes inherently right or wrong.
