What Would Fascism Look Like in America Today?

You're never powerless when you control the media.
The Independent vote is a force multiplier for the Republicans at least, sometimes.

My hubby's a member of the crips (no, not the gang) and all he gets is a parking tag. The overwhelming majority of disabled people try their hardest to be productive citizens. It's not their fault that in certain instances they become powerless. Picking on disabled people is pretty low.
I take it that the word "cripple" is now on the Forbidden, Politically Incorrect Word list?
And I don't pick on them. I actually help blind folks and I do it gratis. What have you done for suffering humanity lately?
I just think it is more important to fix our bridges (which are falling down) and our roads (which are falling apart). That is something the government is in a position to do since it has the power to tax. Providing crutches and treats for the lame is something best done by private parties, not the government.

Why not the government? Why is private better than public? Here in Finland the government provides all the needs for the disabled and nobody finds it dismaying.
Because the people who man the government in the United States are not competent to run a lemonade stand at a profit. The people who make policy and run the burocracy are hacks, slugs, worms and just sh*t stupid.
Maybe you Finns are smarter than us United Stateseans. In the U.S. the brightest and the best go into the private sector.

And maybe if the lobbyists were not permitted to hogtie people running for election when they need millions of dollars to get the publicity they need to pay the privately owned media that have been given control of the public airways, maybe the best and the brightest might find it worthwhile to participate in government. Bribing government by private corporations is the way the ass kissers get elected.

Scapegoating as in what? Just ranting about it or do you really think mass extermination would be in order in this day and age after what happened in Europe during WWII? Something in between maybe?
Mass social castration would work i think, this would include not conducting business with whoever was the scapegoat of course. I think this would be more likely than a scheme of scapegoating that would involve the law at least at first anyways. Because it could be carried out by the media and lack overt government involvement.

Although it's outsourced, the torture that we enact against the muslims is every bit as disgusting.
The kind that is still being outsourced by Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid? They're all complacent in it.
I'm not saying they're any better. They're simply the illusion of choice but the true power and sway is with the "republicans".
Interesting to see that the right does not hold a monopoly on delusions of persecution.

Maybe if my hobbies weren't illegal, I'd stop having "delusions" of persecution.

My point is that the government does not provide treats for the disabled. I agree that fixing and improving our infrastructure is vital, but it does not need to come at the expense of disabled people.
And I don't have a problem with the word cripple, it just doesn't always accurately describe disabled individuals. Many times disabilities are not physical in nature.

Given a choice between fixing one disabled human and one disabled bridge over which a million productive humans travel to get to work, I choose the bridge.

Nothing wrong with it being used correctly, but it can certainly be, and is used in a negative manner.

Though this wasn't directed at me personally, I prefer not to boast of any good deeds I perform. To do so rather demeans the altruism of any generous act.

I happen to think that people have more value than bridges, despite my general dislike of the majority of them. And it does not matter who provides health care, as long as it is affordable and available to all.
And to answer the original question:
Fascism in modern America would initially look identical to the Tea Party.

That's a bit of an absurd statement. If disabled people could be fixed, then we wouldn't have so many disabled people. At best, disabled people get SSDI, which some even payed into themselves prior to becoming disabled. I don't think I've ever heard of a disabled person receiving more than 20 or 25k/year in benefits. I'm quite positive that fixing a bridge would cost much more than that.

You're never powerless when you control the media.
The only media outlets that lean Conservative are Fox News, Wall Street Journal, and most of Talk Radio aside from NPR. (Some blog sites too)
Everything thing else is in the pocket of the Left Wing of the Democrat Party.
Reason Fox News is doing so well is that CBS, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, etc. have lost all credibility.
You hear about the attempt by a CBS affiliate to make up a story about Republican Joe Miller in Alaska being tied to pedophiles?

Fox News hypes up stories and gets the other news vendors to go along. They have lost their credibility: they let Fox News define what's important to cover and talk about.

Fox News wasn't the one trying to come up with a bogus story that a Republican candidate was associated with child molesters. (See the CBS affiliate in Alaska)
Fox News also wasn't the one that came up with a bogus story using fraudulent documents about President Bush in 2004. (I have a bachelor's in Computer Graphics Technology) The documents were blatantly fraudulent because it had variable space typing which is only seen on modern computer printers not typewriters/electric typewriters. (See Dan Rather and CBS)
Fox News didn't fire someone for expressing honest feelings and pointing out in the followup that we need to move beyond those feelings. (See NPR's firing of Juan Williams)
