I wouldn't say tolerating and looking the other way at intolerance is in fact tolerant.

The left tolerates facism and racism when it comes from their side. Conservatives do not tolerate fascism nor do they tolerate racism.

I'm less tolerant of Islam, to be honest. It hasn't had a Reformation yet. I think I only feel that way because I live in a place where Islam is the more vocal religion. If I lived in the US, I'd probably feel differently.

I'm think I'm just intolerant of people who try to religify (not a word) civic life - I'd find it annoying if it was any religion. Yes ,I know a secular public life is a recent phenomenon - and still, to most cultures it's an aberration, but I do so enjoy the luxury of keeping my beliefs private.

They are trying to do it in the US too.

I don't know.

They're just people like I am - but just being around religious people - it always feels like they're trying to rub it in my face that I'm different. I can't really talk about my boyfriend, I can't talk about alcohol or bring any pork to eat at work. It just feels so awkward when people are going off to pray, when all you can think about is going home to have some whisky and sausages and then fornicate with your unmarried lover. I can't even greet people the way they do - they can't say things like salaam and inshallah to me, like they always do to each other.

I don't think they're trying to do anything more sinister than make their religion seem default and normal, compared to my native heathenry. I think that's how they get converts, both Christianity and Islam. What scares me is that in the past both religions would've seen me as incredibly wicked if I didn't belong to them. Now I'm just misguided and not part of their loving community - which is like a watered down, democratic version of being a wicked heathen/infidel.

Didn't Trent Lott resign from being Senate Minority Leader in 2002 after making those comments that were racially charged.

And since he kept getting attacked over it he ended up completely resigning from the senate in 2007.

Just because one makes a stupid comment, doesn't make one a racist. The left however looks for anything they can to brand someone a racist in order to demonize them and scare people that disagree with them into keeping silent.

I do not care for the incursion of Islam either. If someone is a muslim, fine, but don't expect me to tolerate all muslims because the truth about Islam is not neutral or PC.

Conservatives are for individual liberty, that means Government has no business telling us what to eat, what opinions to have, etc.

The locations that you got that information from either are misinformed or they outright lied to you.

Word of advice: "Don't drink the Kool-aide."

Really? What about the Constitution Party or the remaining "radical traditionalists" in the West? They are against gun rights and free trade. Not to say that the left is never totalitarian, but politicized Marxism has no place in a free country. The only thing extremists have in common with each other is that they would all choose to evicerate our freedoms. Yet, among the less extreme, my opinion is that the right currently sounds more authoritative.

The incident proved that a lot of white Republicans are completely clueless/insensitive if not outright racist. I recall a lot of them clapped and cheered after Trent Lott made his remarks.

No, it is more of a reaction to the radical leftists that want to use the political arena to impose Marxist views on everyone else. The right actually isn't authoritarian because the Constitution is for limited government which flies in the face of an authoritarian style of government.

Puddingmouse -

I am a sausage lover myself. In any case -

it is the mindset, not the content. As the universal heretic, I getg it from both sides. People of THAT TYPE who are religion focussed have serious problems because I do not do and avoid and believe and denounce the same list of things. People of THAT TYPE into liberal politics are distressed that I have bad beliefs condemned my the rule book and do not think and act the RIGHT way. People of THAT TYPE who are atheists get angry that I believe in idiotgic things and tear down the temple of science. Conservatives of THAT TYPE think I am a dangerous, thionly disguised leftist.

All the time I am just a guy who has looked at the evidence available to me and come to conclusions about life and the universe without putting on a uniform. THAT TYPE thinks you are LESS of a threat if you are in the enemy's unifor, If you wear no uniform, they don't know where to put you and that makes you bad.

People of the OTHER TYPE [I have been privileged to know a few] do NOT care if you are atheist, religious, liberal, conservative, artist scientist, street sweeper, albino Fijian, or English peer. They ak, WHO are you, not WHAT are you, can you talk, do you think.

It is very easy to say "Religious people are THAT TYPE". Certain types of organization attract them, we all know people like that. Very easy to say "Liberal academics are THAT TYPE". Cetain types of organization attract the, we all know peoplse like that.

But it is the TYPE, not the subject. A skunk that thinks a chicken is its mother is not going to peck grain. That someone of THAT TYPE and get him believing in antigravity, and he will be looking funny at you because you don'tr even try to levitate.

You're right Philologos. I guess I just feel that way because I'm around some in-your-face religious people. It's the in-your-face bit that bugs me.

You mean:
Trent Lott spoke on December 5, 2002 at the 100th birthday party of Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, a long time conservative leader. Thurmond had run for President of the United States in 1948 on the Dixiecrat (or States' Rights) ticket. Lott said: "When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years, either."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trent_Lott

Looking at the quote now, how is this racist? It looks more to me like trying to make a guy whom just turned 100 feel good about himself. You want to cry racism over it, but he could have been referring to stuff that had nothing to do race.

I decided to look for the quote that caused the fiasco, and it looks to me that people were making a big deal over nothing. What did you want Senator Lott to do, publicly bad-mouth someone at their 100th birthday party, then he'd be accused of hating the elderly.

I once got accused of sexual harassment because I apologized to a student for anything I might unwittingly have done to make her obviously hate my guts all semester. It is not about facts, DEFINITELY not about intentions, it is about what narrative you can Cinderella's slipper your foot into.

Is there anybody on here whose political views are vastly different than their parent's/upbringing?
