You should say mechanical energy out less than total energy in. Whatever energy is not transformed into mechanical energy is dissipated in the form of heat and other non-mechanical effects. Total mass-energy in the universe is strictly conserved. It cannot be either created or destroyed; only transformed.

Well sure, but I think he was referring to diminishing returns? Or the inefficiency of current solar technology?
