You guys sound really well-informed, please keep us up to date in future

Hmmm, are you being mean? ...or do you really want me to share my brothers' statements with you further? I can't imagine that you would be being mean since we don't do that here.

Incas, Mayans, Aztecs, Babylon, off the top of my head.

This point might be debatable, but I don't think societies have had as much of an issue with lesbianism as they've had for male homosexuality. That would have much to do with gender roles, but whenever some political pundit is giving some kind of tirade against gays, he almost always talks exclusively about male homosexuals.

Otherwise, disapproval of homosexuality would have a lot of to do with our natural inclination to fear and distrust that which we do not understand. People who are better educated, or are acquainted with gay individuals, are more likely to be accepting of them. People who are not educated nor do they know of any gay individuals have to rely on what they're told about them, which is often negative stereotypes and ignorant notions of them.

You don't think female circumcision isn't a condemnation of the female orgasm?

I don't know how female circumcision comes up, but I wouldn't go so far as to assert that. My point was that lesbianism seems to not be met with as strong a backlash (save for lusty straight men) as male homosexuality. Again, that could be debatable.

My choice is "all of the above" but it wasn't an option in the poll. Though I think the weakest of those reasons is the whole "cannot produce children". Knowing the "be fruitful and multiply" verse from the Bible, I always saw that verse more as mere words of encouragement but some people are using this argument to death that they make it sound like it's the 11th commandment or something...that if you don't produce tons children and overpopulate the earth, you'll go to hell for sure.

As for the Bible, I don't really think God hates homosexuals. The Bible says God hates homosexuality. He also hates sin. Sin is why He sent his only Son to die for our sins; proof that he doesn't hate sinners. Some of us are homosexual. How could any good and loving Father hate His child because of who they choose to love? I think the homo-phobes have it wrong and are using God and the Bible in a sick, perverted way.

For God the Creator to hate homosexuality is logical. Homosexual unions don't reproduce. Civilizations have fallen. Entire tribes of people have un-reproduced themselves out of existence. God really wanted the Jews to survive.

TODAY, the whole "cannot produce children" thing might seem as silly as owning slaves, but it is a valid choice. Artificial insemination wasn't heard of until the 1970's.

As for concern about men and not so much for lesbians, perhaps it has something to do with fathering children. Since women can't get each other pregnant, who cares?

I doubt it's as simple as that. I bet it's more complex than it seems, and is likely an amalgalm of most of what was posted.

Why not say Rome? That's a great example.

Depending on which civilization you're referring to, homosexuality is believed to be a contributing factor, as was the weather (El Nino), corruption and/or human sacrifice/cannibalism. And to be fair, the Mayans didn't totally disappear. There are still some around but the great civilization was on its way out by 900 A.D. I did my research when I was in college. I think you can manage Google by yourself.

Also, before the 1970's, artificial insemination was considered Science Fiction, if at all. Survival used to be more of an issue than it is today. Homosexuality would threaten the survival of the collective and could be considered selfish.

Hi unduki,

The first documented artificial insemination was performed by Spallanzani in 1784.

When you say Rome, you should read Gibbon's "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire", which cites the decline basis as because of the birth of "The Age of Faith". It certainly didn't fall because of the martial spirit inherent in the role model of Spartan Homosexuality practiced by the pre-Christian Romans. The U.S.A.'s founding fathers' assumption inspired from the Aeneid gave rebirth to this also, but again was poisoned by the protesting church in public: http://harpers.org/archive/2007/09/hbc-90001205

With my encounters with various church officials, with some of the world's oldest churches, homosexuality is only prohibited by the doctrines in public.

You have the notion of "selfishness" backwards, as Jesus is the one who coined the phrase "It is better to give than to receive," while most everyone else is blabbering virginity and being "fruitful".

Jealousy? lol. I think most of what it comes down to insecurity with their own sexuality and if they're not allowed to do it nobody else should.

It is a bit broad for me to claim this for all of the major Mesoamerica Civilizations, but I think they failed because they did not have a system of international relations that could handle power without absolute hegemony. Most of them failed when native powers strengthened on their borders. Their power depended, in general, on absolute power. When the Spanish arrived on the periphery, they were pretty much stuffed, they had no way of dealing with them and other smaller powers were pulled towards an alternate center of gravity. The centrifugal forces that shifted the power away from the center tore the states to pieces. Most of their states had no chance of surviving this process in tact, almost regardless of what the Spanish did.

A similar system of sovereignty in use within China could not accept the presence of a powerful alternate to themselves Their reaction to Macartney's embassy showed that their system simply had no way of dealing with power that was not 'all under heaven'. Their concept of Tianxia worked from the assumption that barbarians existed at the periphery of their power; the presence of a confident British Empire led to conflict basically becoming inevitable. If China did not have a common history of between resistance to western disease; they would may have collapsed in much the same way as the American Civilizations. They were saved because they preserved their core, the Mesoamerica Civilizations did not manage the same.

If someone thinks that being gay brings down society please Google the 'Sacred Band'. Post-modernism and the abandoning of our common bonds, breaks down civilization. Being gay, or having a large amount of gay people in a society does not. Many of my friends in uniform are gay and they are as competent, patriotic and brave as the rest of us.

Hmm, this is the second interesting idea I've encountered in this thread! I don't know near enough Chinese history and I CANNOT know enough Mesoamerican history.... Looks like I have some reading to do.

@jacoby

Finally, we agree on something.

I have no clue. I haven't figured it out.

I also don't see why people care if a gay person is attracted to them or not. I've been asked out by gay women before, it's flattering to be asked out by anyone. I explained that I was straight and that was the end of it. I have lesbian friends and gay men friends. Women who are friends with gay men but are afraid of lesbians confuse me. Lesbians are other women. Women need women friends. Just because they are attracted to women doesn't mean they are attracted to you! I also have straight male friends. Again, just because they are attracted to women doesn't mean they are attracted to you!

People are people. Jerks come in all colors, sizes, religions, and sexual orientations. Good people come in all colors, sizes, religions and sexual orientations. It seems to be an obvious fact, but a lot of people just don't seem to get it.
