Then again, that's perceived worth. In more concrete terms, I'd say children are actually worth *less* because they don't contribute to society.

I can honestly say I don't really care about kids more than adults, even in a visceral sense. Cruelty to an old or middle aged person is just as disturbing to me as cruelty to a child. Is that wrong?

No.

Not that I hate kids or anything. I am sure when I have my own kids I will adore them. :)

I've also noticed that charity ads and websites, such as the website of the World Food Programme, always show a lot of children and very few (if any) adults. Most people don't give a damn about starving adults.

Edited to add: I imagine that starving kittens would be even more effective. If we could magically turn all homeless people into fluffy kittens, very few of them would have to sleep under bridges.

they do that intentionally. the children's charities actually benefit the entire community, but the promoters know that pictures of children in need will pull at heartstrings. it is assumed that adults can "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" whereas children (and kittens) are helpless.

Sort of, but like i said, they have done much less to piss us off. Their balance sheet is almost entirely positives.

When an adult dies, even when they die too young, they have lived some time and their balance sheet is mixed, possibly slightly negative, even if they are generally a nice person.

Even so. I don't suspect he'll be much use after he learns a small child was sacrificed for a few years more of his life, anyway.

These calculations are all very subjective and complex. This Gordion knot is easily resolved simply by adopting a consistent standard.

What about when children and younger people die because they couldn't receive an organ donation in time, but old people like Dick Cheney get anything they need? Hard to say whether that is right, but it seems wrong to me.

Yes, Children should be preferred for organ donation.
But the best would be if there where enough organs, or if it would be possible to create artificially organs.
( I think we need much more person who want to donate a organ after dead)

If we could start cloning and harvesting the clones organs like they did in a movie similar to that we would have plenty of organs to work with.

if you had to make the grisly choice between killing a 90 year old woman who was expected to live a week longer or a 5 year old child who who was expected to live to 90. who would you save? As morbid as the question is, there is an objectively correct answer to question. You know what you know what you would do.

I apologize for the depressing subject matter in my post, but hey, you started it.

And I'd suspect the ninety year old person with only a week more to live would think likewise.

I'd ask the child first, do you want to become like this one day? pointing out towards the 90 year old.
