If this world is Hell, what did we do before this to get here? What was that place like? Were we born here to earn our way out, and we all start off here, or do you believe we elected to come here before we were born? These are the questions I'd want to ask.
i can only speak for myself, but i had some unusually vivid dreams in which i saw glimpses of previous lifetimes - in one i was a thug, a common brutal thief/burglar/bullyboy who saw himself in a reflection of the windowglass in front of a prison building where i was toiling in a veggie garden in front. i was short, swarthy, black-haired, bulky yet athletic, with the expression of a dumb animal but with a sneer. in another lifetime [i believe before the other one] i was a tall, fair, blond playboy who jilted one too many rich women and found himself on the rejected end, and my giant ego couldn't handle that so i threw myself off of the ocean-going ship i was on. that would seem to put some light on my present situation as a hermit in a kind of penance lifetime. i see people living heavenly lives when i turn on the TV or go to the city and see the city swells leading their carefree lives in carefree bodies in upper-class splendor. and i see people in my corner of yahooville leading lives of tedious squalor or worse, with some living under bridges and freezing to death [always a few frozen corpses discovered each winter]. one person i went to high school with, he was intellectually normal but he had psychological demons plus he had a deformed face, apparently life did not go well for him and one day he went to a gas station, took a pump, doused himself with fuel and lit a match. afterwards it was discovered that he had lived in an abandoned barn in the dead of winter for at least 6 weeks, and was probably freezing cold. i wept for him.

he and I were on opposite ends of the island of unwanted rejected toy humans but i was luckier. some eastern religions refer to this world as a "hellworld." i can dig it
anyways, for what it's worth to you [since you asked for other people's beliefs], i believe we existed in spirit for untold eons before incarnating on a young earth, matriculating into higher realms of thought organization/life forms over countless centuries. i believe some come here voluntarily but most are given little choice but to come here as penance for misbehavior/failure on higher worlds, and end up getting trapped in a karmic web of chained failures. of course it all was arranged before our births. no spiritual being is forced to incarnate but the consequences of refusal are less than pleasant and include being returned to undifferentiated light [losing one's individual identity and rejoining the collective spirit world from which spiritual life originates], IOW being recycled. this little ditty by rumi expresses how i feel about it-
I died as a mineral and became a plant;
I died as a plant and rose to animal;
I died as animal and I was a man.
Why should I fear? When was I less by dying?
Yet once more I shall die as man to soar
With angels blest. Yet even from an angel
I must pass on; All except God must perish.
When I have sacrificed my angel soul,
I shall become what no mind ever conceived.
